People, there is one unbreakable rule of fandom and that is, thou shalt not out a fellow fan to her family/friends/employers/significant others/etc.It is cause for immediate shunning and banning, one strike and you're out. Assholes who do shit like this do not deserve to be trusted after they've betrayed and broken our trust in them, and they make ( Read more... )

Yeah, I've been seeing people saying about this whole outing business, and while I dunno who it is (I gather it's in SPN) it gives me the very unhappy kind of shudders. Ew, bad, wrong, do not pass go, ick.

Yeah, it was a fairly well known wincest writer, from what I've been told. It's leading to other people locking down/cutting their flists etc., which is where it hurts not only the person who was outed, but fandom at large as well.

I can understand being angry at someone, but not so angry as to do something like that.

My level of comfort is mine That's why it seems to me that it's the worst kind of betrayal, of abuse. I don't know the person involved, and I don't think it matters, anyway to feel bad and outraged on their behalf.
Now, though, more paranoia sounds healthy.

Right. It doesn't matter that I don't know her personally. It matters that in this case, we share a fandom, and also a larger community on LJ. It's sickening that someone could do something so blatantly vicious.

I am really shocked The Dark Knight didn't get a best picture nod, nor did Nolan get a Best Director nomination.

I'm not. Hell, I'm still a little amazed they nominated Heath, solid lock on the win or not. If they won't give an animated movie a shot at the major prize, I can't see them doing the same for a superhero movie no matter how wonderfully made it is. Eventually, hopefully, when someone removes the rest of the stick from their ass.

But I saw a lot of press for TDK talking about how it was more than "just" a superhero movie, and certainly the direction was fantastic, despite whatever feelings I may have had about the content of the story.

Oh, yeah, I think it was definitely well-made enough to warrant more attention, but the Academy is notoriously narrow. It takes so much to get them to nominate outside the box. And for some reason they're always so far behind the rest of Hollywood -- movies based on comics are really starting to get better scripts, effects and actors on a regular basis, but I've got way too much experience watching these nominations. I'll bet you any amount of money that regardless of the critics, they said "superhero movie" and walked on by.

It's like with rap songs in the Best Song category -- it's only in the past few years when they've started to consider them nomination-worthy. Rap's been a viable genre for a few decades now and it's taken them this long to recognize that. I think they're going to need a few more years on the movies-based-on-comics front. Heath's nomination is a step in the right direction, though.

Yeah, I guess, but I also kinda thought after RotK won, they'd broken open the genre ghetto.

Wow. I can't imagine the level of embarrassment I'd feel if any of my family members knew about my online life. World of NO! It's not so bad for mebecause I'm not a fandom writer, but how would I explain my fictional incest ships???

Yeah, I mean, my family all knows, so I don't care about that part, but it's not anyone else's business to tell them for me, you know? It's just mean and low-down.

I never bother, because my friends/family already know. For work - well, I've tried to keep my full name and my fannish name separate, with mixed results, but so far I've been lucky.

And yeah, if Clooney comes back, I'd have to watch.
