many times i've lied and many times i've listened

I have had two epiphanies today, and it is not even eleven am. I consider this a successful day. Can I go home now?

Epiphany 1: I slept terribly this weekend, and since my big plan was to, um, sleep, that made me very cranky. I woke up yet again about an hour before my alarm went off, and finally said, 'fuck this, I'm shutting the window and ( Read more... )

Then I'm especially sorry that "Waitress" let you down...because while to me it was a movie about Nathan Fillion, to you it was a movie about pie, and it betrayed you!

Huh. I really enjoyed "Waitress." Obviously, pie symbolized a lot more than love in that movie, but that's just how I mostly use it in my own stories.

Sorry, I remembered incorrectly, that you had posted that you didn't like the film.

No worries. I know there were a couple people on my flist who had problems with it, but I quite liked it.

(my stories don't work for a lot of readers either, but that's a different, though probably not unrelated, thing): I think you're being overly harsh on yourself there. You are one of my favorite writers & you'd be my 'deserted island'/'you can only read one author for the rest of your life' choice. If your stories don't work for someone, that's their fault because I think you're brilliant.

Thank you very much!

I'm not saying it to be harsh on myself, I just think that no writer works for everybody, and I know the kinds of stories I write - generally heavy on either atmospheric emoporn or banter without much plot - aren't everyone's cup of tea.

but I'm really happy you like them. I like them, too. *g*

I hear you about titles and summaries, especially summaries (I often steal my titles too these days *g*).

A lot of times I give up trying to come up with a good summary and use a sentence or two from my actual story. Which feels like cheating, but otherwise I'm at a total loss! But I honestly cringe when I finish writing a story and have to face choosing a title and summary. The story itself? A piece of cake compared to that moment.

That's the method I use. I don't consider it giving up. Often there is a line I think perfectly encapsulates the story, though I don't think it necessarily tells you anything about the plot, and probably makes more sense once you've read the thing.

A lot of my stories already come with titles attached, so that's slightly less fraught for me these days, but when they don't, or the original title no longer fits and I have to scramble for a new one? *shudders* I hate that.

*facepalm*

I'm operating on three hours of sleep, so I first read "anonyfest" as "agonyfest" and thought, "Why???"

Mmm, pie. Must get back to Betty's. I may go strawberry picking this weekend and make my own pie.

I tend to like your blurbs. When I'm unfamiliar with the fandom your stories kind of make me wish I were since they always sound intriguing. Your blurbs set the tone, which is sometimes more helpful than a terse summary.

Summaries are hard. Especially when one's stories are pretty damn short to begin with.

Bwah! I do find anonymity an agonyfest, personally. I've heard all the arguments and none of them resonate for me.

Must get back to Betty's.

Apparently it's not what it once was. *points to next comment* Wah. I hate change.

Thank you!

That's kind of what I like, what I use to choose, myself. I want a summary that's going to give me an indication of tone and style. The plot... eh, I am not so hung up on plot.

And yeah, when you're writing short and the stories are full of interiority but not much action, it's kind of hard to write summaries that will hook people in. Otoh, I do think that the types of stories and summaries I write tend to attract people who like those types of stories, you know? So it generally works out. But in an anonymous ficathon, maybe not so much.

Oh, that sucks.

I got the Betty's Cook Book, but It's Not The Same. *pout*

I was there two summers ago, and the pies were things of beauty.

Yeah, I'm finding this news more than mildly upsetting. I can't believe it's gone after so long! But we did get there just in time, luckily.
