Gibbons is a favorite, but I have tended to run with everything you point out for the last twenty years, basically until my brain fatigues of it. Not to mention one's acquaintances. I had forgotten (thus fulfilling the quote myself) the specific incidents that led to the Lex Gabinia and the ensuing slide into Imperium. BTW, 6 is a valid pull from the book. The only difference may be the rationale behind doing it then versus now

I find that the ones who already get it are fascinated to talk about it. The ones who don't want to hear it are the ones who haven't begun to fathom it. They either think it unpatriotic or are happy in their ignorance of it. The ones who are in a position to actually do anything about it have absolutely no inclination to do so, and those who want to try to change the course have neither the money nor the power to try.
