Help! I'm snowed in!

Yeah, yeah, baby snow. I know. It amuses me how easily this country grinds to a halt in the face of it, when I'm not struggling through the disaster area that our public transport system becomes because of it, that is. But there's 2-4 inches of the white powdery stuff laying in my front and back garden right now, with drifts up to a foot in places ( Read more... )

Well, I've already offered a bucketful or two of the stuff to asphodeline. You're more than welcome to some as well.

Actually, I've just turned the heating on 24 x 7, so I'm barely noticing it. I dread to think what my next gas bill will be like though.

Hope all goes well. Snow is much more of a project to deal with when you don't get it often and aren't as used to the routine. Or when the infrastructure for dealing with it isn't in place in your area. We had fair warning of our December snows this time, and I remember seeing country trucks being converted to snowplows just in time.

Good that you went shopping ahead of time. But you have my complete sympathy regarding the lack of chocolate. :-)

Generally snow preparations here don't involve much more than salting train platforms, gritting the roads, and then plowing the major ones after a fall. The southern part of the country doesn't get more than 2-4 real snowfalls a year, most of which melt within a couple of days, so it would be pointless and uneconomic to have all the equipment for the rare occasions like this week. This is apparently the heaviest fall in 18 years, and even so the snow had melted back from the house walls where it was warmest by the time I went to bed last night.

It definitely looks a lot more cheerful this morning, though that's probably because (a) the sun is out, and (b) much of the snow on my conservatory roof has melted, so I've got more natural light at the back of the house today.

I still don't plan to go out though, unless it's to refill the bird feeders.
