A Little Pick-Me-Up

I'm not sure why it is, but the smell of coffee would perk me up long before I could actually stomach drinking the stuff. I don't believe that caffeine could enter my body via my sense of smell, but I'm at a loss to explain my reaction to it ( Read more... )

wow. I thought I was the only one in the US who wasn't raised by coffee drinkers! My dad drank it way back when I was pre-school, but after that, no coffee in the house until I got married. I married an addicted coffee drinker and I can't understand it at all. I do like an iced mocha or frozen, and I LOVE coffee in deserts like Tiramisu, but otherwise? meh.

I'm not a hot liquid drinker on my best day, and my first tries at making it were beyond nasty. Like so many things there's no real set instructions. It's something you're supposed to learn from your parents.

However, I do love the smell. When I drive to work, I drive over the Folger's plant. When they are making flavored coffees the smell is to die for. =) Though I admit there are some that make me gross out. And to me 'coffee breath' is as enticing as 'smoker breath'. ugh.

My love of coffee started at the A&P of my youth. At the end of every register sat a coffee grinder to grind your 8 o'clock coffee in. (A huge innovation considering the old grinding thingies ifyou wanted freshly ground.)

Ah, the smell! The heavenly smell!!!

My mom drank tea. Dad usually made due with instant. I didn't even have my first cup of coffee until I was 17, and yet, I've loved that smell for as long as I can remember.

Problem is I get confronted with so much bad coffee... The water-diluted machine coffee at work, the sweet stuff at Starbucks. For a while it made me believe I didn't like coffee. Until I'd smell a real good cup again. Just the smell makes me happy and just the first sip gives me a jolt. Which, my more analytically inclined friends say, is impossible because the caffeine doesn't do anything until it's digested in your stomach. But yeah, I know what you mean.

I rarely drank coffee til I started working at that job I hated... couldn't keep myself awake. And it was an excuse to run away for 5 minutes. Now I enjoy a cup (better if it's NON Starbucks) but heavily laden with creamer. I do hate the cost. I can make it cheaper at home.
