"Are you sure you have to go see your mother right now?" the Doctor whined. "Wouldn't you rather... oh, I don't know, go for a walk along a deserted, starlit beach? Visit some hot springs? I know - we could go see a Beatles concert!" He finished with a flourish, one finger punctuating the air.
Rose grinned. "Oh, no you don't, mister," she said reproachfully. "You could use some serious coddling after what you've been through. There's a couch at my mum's with your name on it."
The Doctor grimaced, and Rose rolled her eyes. They had just left the planet Karn, where she and the Doctor had been involved in some rather disturbing events. The Doctor had tangled with the evil Sister Melina, who had been scheming to seize power and enslave the other members of the Sisterhood of Karn. Melina had been stopped, but almost at the cost of the Doctor's life. While the adventure had been a harrowing one, Rose wouldn't have traded it for anything, as she had learned many things about the Doctor that she never would have otherwise. More importantly, she and the Doctor were now what he referred to as 'a bonded pair' or what Rose liked to think of as 'Time Lord-engaged.'
Rose watched as the Doctor sulkily flipped switches at the console of the TARDIS, the frown on his face accentuated by the glowing green light of the rotor as his long fingers moved to set their destination. "Oh, come on. It can't be that bad," she teased.
He didn't look at her as he continued to set their course. "It's not, really. I don't mind your mother, in fact, she's been much nicer since Christmas - didn't get a single slap, did I? It's just... " He trailed off as he tugged on an apparently sticky lever. "Well... maybe I wanted to keep you to myself for a little while longer," he mumbled, his voice barely audible.
Rose felt her heart turning to goo in her chest as she gazed at his profile, illuminated by the green glow of the rotor. "You... you do? You're not having me on, are you?"
His head turned to her, large, luminous brown eyes taking her in. "I wouldn't have said it if I didn't mean it, Rose." Her breath caught in her throat as his gaze locked with hers. A chime sounded from the console and he moved to the viewscreen, the spell broken.
"Hang on... landing now." He maneuvered carefully around to a separate panel to flick switches and turn dials. The rotor halted, and the engine noises stopped with a dull thud. Almost instantaneously, a shriek could be heard from outside the doors, followed by angry shouting.
"Coddling, eh?" the Doctor muttered, gazing wistfully at the handbrake. "Does your mother even know the meaning of the word?"
"Um... maybe not such a good idea after all," Rose replied, squirming in the captain's chair as the shouting grew louder.
"Well, we're committed now," the Doctor said as he grabbed her hand to drag her to the doors.
***************
Rose winced as they exited the TARDIS. Jackie Tyler greeted them, hands on hips and in full battle mode.
"Oi! Would it 'ave killed you to have parked that thing outside? I've got friends coming over for dinner, you alien sod!"
"Mum, please! We can move the TARDIS later. He's been hurt!" Rose interjected while the Doctor looked on, seemingly amused.
"Hurt?" Jackie drew back to take a look at them. "What d'you you mean, hurt? He looks fine to me."
Rose shot a 'play along' glance back to the Doctor, who immediately took on a fatigued appearance. "He was stabbed, Mum. He's better now, but he needs to rest - "
"Oh, good Lord - he's absolutely filthy! Look at his jacket," Jackie interrupted. "What a mess!" she exclaimed, tracing a finger around the remaining bloodstains on the Doctor's jacket. "That's not gonna come out without a fight," she muttered, not noticing that the Doctor was trying to carefully back away from her. "And you, sweetheart? You're all right?"
"I'm fine, Mum," Rose answered. "He saved the lives of lots of people, you know."
"What?" Jackie questioned as the Doctor shrugged. "The things you two get up to. I'll never understand it. You," she said, jabbing a finger at the Doctor. "Get those filthy clothes off right now!"
The Doctor looked mortified, the fingers of one hand inching toward the buttons of his suit jacket while his eyes darted to Rose's, pleading wordlessly for assistance. Rose smirked.
"Oh for God's sake, not here!" Jackie tutted. "There's some of Howard's pajamas in my bedroom. You can go change in there."
Rose somehow managed to stifle her laughter as the Doctor all but ran for the relative cover of Jackie's bedroom.
***************
"So just how did he get himself stabbed?" Jackie hissed, leaning over the table. "I swear, if that man had you in a dangerous situation again, I'll kill him!"
Rose rolled her eyes. The Doctor was tucked up safely on the couch in the living room, wearing yet another pair of Howard's pinstriped pajamas in addition to a forest green terry bathrobe, with a light blanket draped over his lap. She watched him for a moment, as he aimlessly clicked through channels on the telly, looking for something that might hold his attention.
"Well? Are you going to tell me or not?"
"There's really nothing to tell, Mum," Rose mumbled, feeling awful about lying to her mother. "We were on another planet and the people there were in trouble. He saved all of their lives, he just... got stabbed doing it...." She trailed off, pushing her guilt back down. She didn't, of course, mention that she'd been the one who had stabbed him, but there'd be a lot of awkward questions later if that little fact ever came to light. She picked up one of the slices of bread from the table and buttered it generously, trying to change the subject. "So, do you think you'll be able to get the blood out of his jacket?"
"I'll do my best, but no promises, sweetheart. I think the stain's set, to be honest," Jackie replied, going back to assembling sandwiches. "So what does he like?"
Rose started, but forced herself to remain calm. How could she possibly know? "What d-do you mean?" she stammered.
"I know he had Christmas dinner with us, but does he like sandwiches? You don't think it's too plain, do you?"
"It'll be fine, Mum," Rose replied, relief seeping through her. "He'll eat anything."
"But does he need anything? I mean, he apparently needed a cup of tea at Christmas. Does he need that now?"
"He doesn't bite, Mum," Rose said, tamping down the sudden erotic image that passed through her mind. "You should be asking him, not me." Picking up the plate of sandwiches and a napkin, she went out to the living room, leaving a confused Jackie behind in the kitchen.
***************
"This is silly," the Doctor said, his mouth full of ham and cheese. "'M fine, really. The TARDIS could have taken care of my suit and all you would've had to do was your laundry, although I don't know why you won't let the TARDIS take care of your clothes too... "
Rose shushed him with a well-placed napkin to his lips. She could hear her mother still on the phone in the kitchen, using her unexpected arrival as the reason for the sudden cancellation of her dinner party. "I'd rather make sure of that for myself. I almost lost you, and you should really be taking it easy." Trying to ignore the sparks that were shooting though her at the feel of his jaw working beneath her fingers, she removed the napkin, replacing it with her index finger. "Besides, you and my mum should try to get along. You could use some bonding time." The Doctor's eyes widened at this, and Rose shook her head. "That's not what I meant, and you know it," she admonished. "My mum's not so bad... you just need to get to know her."
Rose laughed as the Doctor's eyebrows arched up into his hairline.
***************
Propping her feet up on the coffee table, Rose dejectedly sipped at her tea. While she had been the one to suggest that the Doctor should spend some time with her mother, she found that she was rapidly approaching boredom. The Doctor was still ensconced on the couch, cup of tea in hand, listening with rapt attention as Jackie explained in brutal detail the entire plot of the soap they were currently watching, including who was sleeping with whom. Rose's head nodded as the episode stretched on, with both her mum and the Doctor completely engrossed in the complicated plot. As the strains of music marked the end of the show, Rose started awake in time to see her mum patting the Doctor's robe-covered shoulder as she got up to check on his suit, which was still soaking in the bathroom sink.
"Anything you'd like for dinner, dear?"
"Um... no. Whatever you'd like would be fine. Rose might like chips." He caught her eye and grinned disarmingly at her.
"Fish and chips it is, then," Jackie said, reaching for her purse. "Rose? You want to come along?"
"That's ok, Mum," Rose answered, rubbing at her eyes. "I'd better stay. To keep an eye on him and all that."
"All right then, be back in a jiff."
Rose waited until she heard the key turn in the lock before getting up from her chair and picking up the remote from the table. She switched off the telly and moved to stand beside the couch.
The Doctor cocked an eyebrow at her.
"See?" she said, maneuvering herself to sit in his lap. "That wasn't so bad, was it? You two seem quite chummy now."
He squirmed beneath her. "Rose, I don't think you should... I mean, your mother could come back at any moment."
"Oh, I don't think so," Rose replied, lowering her voice seductively. "Nearest chip shop is... oh, at least a ten minute walk?" She wiggled on his lap, turning to sit astride him. "Then ten minutes back." Lowering her head, she leaned in to kiss him. "You're the almighty Time Lord here, but I'd say we've got at least twenty minutes...."
The Doctor groaned as Rose sank her fingers into his hair. "Rose... no, no, no... don't do that... not here. This isn't a good... oh. Please don't stop...."
Rose grinned as the Doctor seemed to turn to jelly beneath her as she continued her gentle massage of his scalp, her fingers occasionally dipping down to circle gently at his temples. She leaned in again to kiss him deeply, her tongue sweeping along the roof of his mouth as her hand drifted down to the tie of his borrowed robe. After undoing the knot holding the robe closed, she inched a hand up under his pajamas and he groaned again, quite loudly, almost blocking out the sound of jingling keys and the sound of a bolt being turned.
Shit! Panicked, Rose leapt off of the Doctor's lap to the floor, leaving him dazed. "You're back already?" she called out.
"No, haven't even left yet. I remembered I had a coupon," her mother called from the front entry. "I'll just grab it - it's in the kitchen." Jackie breezed through to the kitchen, completely ignoring the slightly flustered couple.
"Whew, that was close," Rose muttered. "Looks like you were right. I guess I'll just wait until we go back to the TARDIS, maybe we could - " She was cut off by the sudden press of the Doctor's lips to hers.
"It's too late for that, Rose," he murmured, trying to kiss her again as she drew back. "Far too late."
"What? What are you talking about? My mum's still in the kitchen!"
"My barriers," he whispered as he leaned in and tried to nuzzle her neck. "They're down."
