Fun hat with Finnish Stitch
Lately I've been working with Finnish turning stitches in nalbinding. I've definitely mastered one type, and am currently working with a more complicated turning stitch. Minnesota...ness
So I'm in Minnesota for work. It was sort of a last minute thing. I hate leaving home right after I adjust back, plus getting over whatever I caught at the Copenhagen conference. Russian stitches and the Finnish turning stitch
I've been spending some time learning new nalbinding stitches. The variety of stitches found in period mittens in Finland is pretty astonishing. The Russian family of stitches was/is used in old Finnish Karjala, which was taken by the Soviets at the end of WWII. Back in the USA
So happy to be home. That was a loooong trip. Bruce the dog was very happy when I bailed him out of dog jail yesterday. The conference was great. I set up a new collaboration and met the rest of the people in my sub-field that I hadn't already managed to meet. New nalbinding hat, acorn-style
I finished another hat today. This one is super cute. Usually people start hats at the top with a little circle and nalbind outward. I decided to start with the bottom so that I could end the hat with a little point at the top. I loved how the first set of thumbs on my mittens were all pointy and thought I'd try it with a hat. Olaus Magnus: Hilarious
I've been reading "Description of the Northern Peoples" by Olaus Magnus. Not in the original Latin of 1555, of course. My Latin skills are limited to scientific Latin and what I had to learn in etymology. So far it is hilarious. Magnus is so opinionated and it is just plain fun to read. Mittens, mittens, mittens
That's triple mittens to signify the number of incarnations my current mitten project has undergone. Let's go over my failures, I mean false starts. Try number one involved starting from the wrist.
