Fun with the Skydstrup-style embellishment

While cruising the web, I found a bit about a blouse found in Skydstrup, Denmark, and dated to 1300-1500 BC. What makes this extra cool, is that it seems to be embellished with a braided type of nalbinding (so nalbinding onto woven material, which was also done with gold thread in the much later Viking era; need to research that more). So far I ( Read more... )

In essence that technique is very similar to how you twist cables in knitting. Mel was playing with something similar a few weeks ago. Not sure if he had seen the discussion a out it you referenced.

There's a crochet finish similar to it also. Nice that something so simple can look so lovely. I had done scalloped edges before, but hadn't added a second color until this hat. It would look great on a set of mittens.

It's so funny you should mention mittens - I was just going to send you a note to see if I could swap/barter/cajole/pay you to make me a pair of mittens! It's cold here... What do you think?

Would be happy to make mittens for you. I should post some more mitten pictures and you can see which type you like. Mittens are my favorite thing to make, and I managed some pretty windproof nalbinding last winter (Minnesota tested, Finn approved).

That looks brilliant! Seriously, far better and cooler looking than my attempt. I love the finished hat.

Thanks Ivan! I think the thinner yarn made a difference. I see this and think Christmas presents. That or it would be nice with heraldic colors for people. I am wondering how different it might be with some of the more bulky eastern stitches (like Russian or wacky Karelian turning stitches). Probably just more pronounced.

Hei Sahra! The link would work for me, but if you mean that nifty 3 stranded braid, then yes. I tried that on a hat and it looked super cute. I managed to do the edging like from the bog finding onto fabric, and it is neat although I am not sure how often I would use it.

There are some descriptions in the Hald 1980 book (the one in English), but the big original source is Broholm & Hald 1939, Skrydstrupfundet - en sonderjydsk kvindegrav fra den aeldre bronzealder, Copenhagen: det Kgl. Oldskriftselskab. Also Larry Schmidt put out a short pamphlet on it. I dug up a shorter paper, but I can't find it at the moment. At some point I'll get a review of the sources I dug up on my blog. I have been slow these days. http://medievalelsa.wordpress.com/
