I have that book, which I actually did read and can't for the life of me remember what it was about. I have several of those books that I read way before I got into fan fiction, so back then I probably thought they were the best thing ever.
I honestly don't get the appeal of 50 Shades of Grey, I have no interest in that.
Yeah, the problem with tie-in novels is that they are controlled by people that have usually never seen the source material. Authors are contracted to write within a narrow set of guidelines and don't own a word of it. Writers only take these jobs for the cash or a publication credit. Hell, part of why they're usually bad is the author isn't familiar with the source material, either, or only a bit of it. These books have short deadlines, so you don't have time to research if you also have to work a day job.
RE: 50 Shades, according to Twi-fandom people, the author did a ton of promo and rallying the fandom to buy her work to begin with, which is only barely legal because it's not set in the Twilight-verse. The characters are barely-masked Bella and Edward, just in an all-human light-BDSM scenario. And of course the writing isn't terribly good at all. Regular writers of BDSM erotica novels are pretty pissed this is getting so much attention since they've actually *worked* at craft and publishing.
But, the UK book market is different from US, and that's where an original publisher initially picked up the trilogy.
You usually don't pitch to foreign markets unless the US ones pass. Every country has a different market, with genres that sell more or less and specific preferences.
I didn't have this book, but I think I had one fandom book before for Buffy. I'm not even sure I read it (or wanted to read it...). All of my fandom reading took place with fan fic :)

Anyway, just from what I know about it (and how terribly written it is), it frankly makes me feel sad for Nauti Bitz. She could have made a mint.

Do you think it's better to pitch a novel there as opposed to here?
