Spike, Spuffy, and stuff.

Note: The purpose of this entry is to explain why I feel as I feel about canon Spuffy, and Spike in general.  I don't think a lot of people get they whys and the hows...and maybe they don't care.  That's fine, but I wanted to post this anyway--probably more for myself than anyone...I've discovered some things, working on this new story...also some ( Read more... )

BtVS had such well developed characters it's almost impossible not to identify with each of them at some point, but like you, I find myself most easily and often able to relate to Spike. I think it's partly because his character is so subversive. He's a soulless vampire, but he is capable of good. He's physically strong and male, yet he often seems content to play the more passive, "feminine" role in his relationships. Season six is strange to me because the gender roles, which seemed very much reversed during most of the season, suddenly became traditional again during "Seeing Red." Before, we saw Buffy as the aggressor, both sexually ("Gone") and physically ("Dead Things"); she often used her superior strength to dominate him and control their relationship. Meanwhile, Spike was emotionally manipulative, needy, and sexually passive (not all of the time, but for a good portion of it); fairly or unfairly, these are all traits usually associated with women. I didn't particularly enjoy the mutually abusive nature of their relationship, ( ... )

Like the icon :)

I wish they had stayed that course instead of resorting the attempted rape plot device.

Well, good ol' Maudlin had this to say about the SR bathroom scene:

"I think we made our point."

*crickets*

Make of that what you wish.

Maybe you needed to experience that for you to become who you are now. As you said, you never want to be that weak, vulnerable again.

If using Spike as an example, he also is no longer that person. If you look at who he has grown to be in season 8. I think he also never wants to be that weak again.
Some might break under that strain but others like Spike(and as you mentioned yourself) come out stronger for it. Also not the be forgotten is that everything Spike went through resulted in him being called "the most evolved character in the verse" by Joss. I can't think of a higher praise then that.

The soul, i don't know. I think it could have been developed more organically but by then Joss already knew he only had 1 season left so time was running out. But i quite like and agree that Spike needed a soul to get further. He was already the most unique soulles vampire, choosing to get a soul on his own puts him on a whole other level. And his potential is off the charts.

Hope the nightmares disappear.

Well, such things certainly cause [internal] evolutions :)

The soul...it's a double edged sword for me. On the one hand, I think it was integral to Spike's path on who he was meant to be. But then I also think that had he been elsewhere or had certain supports, he would have got there eventually, albeit through a slower process. Also, I could have seen him getting a soul to prove a point/out of spite from having it thrown in his face so many times for not having one, and the only reason they made him acquire it as they did was to "prove a point" to the audience (i.e. that Spike was bad!rotten!evol!!, as per Noxious).

And...still haunted, but it's not as potent as it used to be. Thanks for commenting :)

Indeed they do.

Totally, i also think Spike would have eventually gotten a soul just on a slower pace. Life is nothing but choices made and paths taken. Well Marti might have wanted Spike to be rememberd as how she views him but it doesn't seem to have sticked as Joss who trumps her authoritah(in Cartman voice) as he clearly views Spike as the superior and credits him for getting his own soul back.
