Now, given that I do believe that if Spike had been played by anyone else, his character would not have made it past "What's My Line? Pt 2" as intended. Even so, I wonder...
I went with Superstar!Jonathan just because it was such a WTF? moment... It had the element of suprise and humor and I think the timing (series-wise) was just perfect to reel in the audience. As long as we're talking kitschy marketing moments, the opening sequence for that ep was pretty priceless!
With regards to Spike, however, you're absolutely right. In fact, it always surprised me hearing that Spike was never meant to be a series regular because of that entrance. I mean, they sold the shit of his character! And yes, James's acting chops have a lot to do with where they were able to take Spike in terms of story, but they brought him on like a force of nature, all fire and sex. To me, there's a serious disconnect between what the behind-the-scenes people (incl. JM!) were saying and what the initial production was doing.
Of course, that Spike is a sexy beast, so maybe my judgement is just a wee bit impaired! ;D
Yeah, when you think of it, you don't give an entrance like that to someone you plan on giving the axe to. I think Joss & Co. were fibbingo n that end, because they worked so hard to make Spike literally the opposite of Angel that...there just had to be something to it.
Or you know, fabulous happenstance.
And I know how you feel bout the impaired judgment. I had to concentrate really hard, and push aside all that bias to see if I could think of a more badass entrance. I still couldn't though :P
Hi! Yeah, Spike's entrance can not be praised enough! I've never seen anything like it anywhere. That scene is perfect in every way imaginable and I'll never forget the impact it made on me. I also remember how much I squeed when they made another version of it in 'Lovers Walk'.
It was a very easy decision to vote Giles, but I'd also like to give an honorary mention to Lorne's entrance in AtS. It's a ROTF moment for me every time I see it! :D
(I've been lurking your LJ every now and then, and I hope you don't mind that I'm friending you.)
Hey pretty lady. I love taking your polls...they're always so much fun! Especially since I haven't watched a BtVS episode in awhile, so I get all nostalgic.
"I'd like to test that theory" was probably one of the best lines of the entire show. And it was easily my favorite moment of the whole Evil!Willow story arc (well except for the scene with Xander and the yellow crayon. I have a soft spot for that).
Darla's entrance into which series? Darla's entrance into the Buffyverse or being brought back by Wolfram & Hart at the end of To Shanshu in L.A. (ATS S1)?
