Best Entrance Poll
Now, given that I do believe that if Spike had been played by anyone else, his character would not have made it past "What's My Line? Pt 2" as intended. Even so, I wonder...
I was just watching an interview of James in the Netherlands, and the opening is a clip when he first enters Sunnydale in "School Hard."
A few years ago, I took AdCult in the USA for a semester, and in it, we studied, well ad culture...but one of the things we studied in particular was Julia Roberts in "Pretty Woman." Particularly how the director essentially made Julia Roberts a star in the film with special lighting techniques to soften her image, timed close ups, sympathetic score of music, etc. Generally stuff I hadn't ever really considered. But they really did sell her to the audience.
So as I watched Spike's initial emergence onto the screen--his first two scenes really--they really did sell him quite well and with layers on top of that. We got the random act of vandalism on the Sunnydale entrance sign, followed by a close up that starts at these combat boots, then travels upward to show the leather duster and his slow strut (words fail me), until finally we get a close up of this bleached blond in game face, smoking a cigarette, and a heavy baseline plays all the while. Then he speaks--he's British, and he plans on staying. He spells "trouble" and "hawtness" simultaneously, and then we see the uber tenderness with Drusilla in his next scene (alongside more bad assness, with the "biggest wrinklies" and so forth). I'm trying to think...and I don't recall anyone else having on either show having as cool an entrance.
Or I could be entirely wrong. What do you guys think?
Anyway, I was intending on going somewhere scientific with this, in regards to marketing, blah blah blah, but screw it. Spike had a great hook, no doubt. But of course, it was so much very more than that. His character was so much more than that. Still, he had quite possibly the kick assiest entry onscreen ever.
