It was crowded on the train this morning (no different than usual) but I noticed a man was taking up two spaces on the bench. Nobody has any guts but me apparently so I tapped the man on the shoulder and said, "Excuse me," expecting him to slide over so I could sit. Instead, he stood up. There need to be a word for this type of situation, where both parties attempt to act politely, but both are embarrassed.

When someone finally sat down beside you at the next stop, did you try to make eyes at the people who saw you take the seat, like, "See! See! I don't mind at all! It was his misinterpretation!"

But at the very least, you can congratulate yourself on having a very authoritative "Excuse me".
