We've had a lot of people on the net over the last twenty four hours discussing Matt Smith as the Eleventh Doctor, whether he'll be good, bad, etc. The arguments are bouncing back and forth.

Just had a conversation with Craig in the pub about Smith, and the reason why the BBC have announced him over a year before he even appears...

That was my second thought, right after "who"? My gut feeling is that it would be too big a thing to pull off.

Is this where you are about to reveal that really it's YOU that is the next Doctor?

That would be fun. It would really enjoy it if that was the case. I love a good chain-yank.

I have had similar thoughts....a year aahead of time does seem a bit far ahead. I can think of three possibilitys

1 - He will be the 11th, they'e just announcing it to get it out of the way and stop all the speculation.

2 - Its a ploy to distract from the real 11th Doctor so they can get on and film what they need to without the press spying and spilling the actual 11th Doctor and storys

3 - He will be the 11th doctor...but the reason for him regenerating will be so truamtic that he also regenerates into the 12th doctor...who then carry on the series into 2010

Whatever happens its going to be great with Moffat at the helm...it would be nice to think that Gallifrey is brought back so he stops moping and angsting allover the shop

Didn't Moffat already used the third idea in his Comic Relief sketch "The Curse of Fatal Death"?
