It's also one of very, very few supers movies where a female hero has her own plot arc and isn't either a victim, arm-candy, or both. That said, the fact that the movie entirely ignored the US civil rights strugge going on at the same time was problematic, but including it would have been problematic in a different way. From my POV, it was quite a good film.

Well... the plight of mutants is supposed to stand in for race relations (as well as other forms of discrimination). If you include a literal depiction of (one of) the thing(s) you are symbolising, the the metaphor becomes redundant.
