heh. i loved that there was a hiccup, i actually cheered, sitting all by myself on our couch eating stew. little hiccups make reality feel purer, somehow. if it makes you feel better, obama didn't forget! the chief justice got the order of the words wrong. [it's supposed to be "i will faithfully excute the office of the POTUS . . . " and judge said "i will execute the office of the POTUS faithfully . . . "] i'm thinking obama had the [right] oath memorized, so he stopped. then he realized even the wrong version still made sense, so he jumped in just as chief justice corrected his error.
Heh! now I have this mental image of that sitcom sound -- the record stopping with a "BLEART" noise -- if somebody tried that amid all the inauguration pageantry. Like in movies when the priest says "speak now or forever hold your peace..." only this time it'd be the whole U.S. power structure stopped mid-toast.
I felt the same way about Elizabeth Alexander. The poem was great; her reading was decidedly NOT. I heard her interviewed on NPR a few weeks ago and she wasn't nearly so bad - maybe she was just nervous?
