Mum & Baby Stuff - an assorted post

You know, the internet is a scary place for potential worry wort parents like me. I have an innate desire to protect Alice from all the dirt and germs and bad things in the world, but I reign it in (mostly) because I know that it's not good for her if I'm overprotective. She needs to be allowed to explore her world without me going into a panic.

I can't make any comments about any of the baby stuff apart from the name!

I have a job where I see an endless stream of childrens names and there are some horrors out there. I figure;
-if it doesn't sound dumb when you speak it out loud, or do that thing where you say the childs whole name to let them them know they are really in the poo;
-if the initials don't spell anything embarrassing/ unfortunate;
- (my more personal bias) if it's not a made-up name that the poor kid is going to spend the rest of their life explaining how to spell "Yes thats Tiffany spelt T-Y-P-H-E-N-N-I-E"; or
-the contraction for it isn't something horrible........

then pretty well nothing is weird. Because believe me there's really some terrible names out there. In fact, it sounds nice to name your baby after someone. Hope that helps.....

Oh there truly are some horrible names out there. Thankfully, our names all satisfy those criteria. We love old fashioned names and have a bit of a criteria that it has to be 100 years or older.

I have had to spell my name my whole life so I never wanted to give my child a name they'd have to spell. That said, I think everyone has to spell it out now as there are so many alternative spelling for even the plainest of names.

Forgot to add that the first name we have picked is the name that Cam's grandmother pretended was her middle name when she was a teenager, because she didn't have one!!

Did you just give me permission to rave on and on and on about how good my Hug-a-bub is??? With it's four different carrying positions (including "pea-pod" for small babies - Lani was too big for this style) and ergonomic wrapping style so the baby's weight is distributed evenly across your back, shoulders and even hips and complete hands free style as you tuck baby's head into the strap and can bend over and backwards without baby losing his/her position, snug against your skin??? And I have two words for my Hug-a-bub second time around: life-saver.

It is not weird choosing the name you have - think of how often your child will see the person in years to come...and even if it was everyday, pick the name you like because you like it. Sophie was the 4th most popular name in 2004 but we liked it so we picked it.

Are you suggesting we have to stop eating cake batter??? How will young children ever enjoy cooking???

I knew you'd vote for the hugabub ;) I find the total handsfree-ness of it to be very appealing. I found with the sling that I had to keep one hand on Alice if I was moving.

I think we will stick to the name we have picked! I hardly see the child anyway and I'm sure there are millions of people out there with similar names. After all, you gave your child a beautiful middle name already belonging to someone you knew ;)

Me suggesting we stop eating cake batter?!? Of course not!! I was just illustrating how mad people are going!

Ok, my thoughts on the whole over cleaning issue.....STOP! It's different to clean, but to make things sterile...well how is anyone suppose to get up immunities to things?!?!? I kid you not, if there's not "germs" lingering around then when kids come in contact with them else where they cop everything known to mankind. I'm not talking all the poisonous stuff like leaving chicken juices on the bench just to toughen up baby's immune system, but just not over doing it ( ... )

You know I agree with you on the over cleaning thing!! People are mad on it at the moment.

I had forgotten about not eating raw eggs - thanks for the reminder!!

I think we will just stick with the name we have picked. We both like it and its hard to get Cam to agree on one at all. After all that, we will probably have no more girls!!

I've calmed down a bit with the house. I'm going to try my best to get low VOC paint and recycled furniture but I'm not going to blow my mind or the budget trying to do everything. Because unless you live in a completely self sufficient farm away from society, you can't do everything perfectly.

i love the butter and sugar creamed together best of all mmmmmm

Olivia and Charlotte were also potential middle names for Alice so either we have similar taste or I'm stalking you single white female style :P

Oh god I just realised our boys' middle name is Thomas, now you are really going to think I'm stalking you (but honestly it's both of Cam's grandfathers' names!!)
