It had been a long, long day. Ryan had always firmly believed that you should get your birthday off of school, and today had only reinforced that belief. Math tests, essays overdue, orchestra rehearsal that went on for ages.
By the time he'd dumped himself at home and portaled to the treehouse, he just wanted to crawl under the blankets on the mattress in the corner - for late-night study sessions, sleepovers and the like - and sleep through the rest of his sixteenth birthday.
"Did you have a good day? I had a good day! Birthdays are so much fun, even when they're not mine!"
Carly surged forward throwing her arms around his neck and kissing his cheek a little shyly, before pulling back to look at him. "I made dinner. Well, I ordered it from the Chinese and then kept it warm, but that totally counts."
Ryan grinned, hugging her back, tightly, and secretly pleased to note that he was two and a half inches taller than her, mwa-ha-ha, FINALLY.
"Yeah, it was great. Better now." It was thoroughly not cheesy of him to get all goofy-smiled and dopey around her. They were best friends. With benefits ranging from the kissing type thing to the always-available date thing. Nothing else. Yet.
"Mmmm, Chinese's my favorite. And it absolutely counts. You kept it from getting cold and icky."
Carly loved everything about Ryan. She loved that he was hers, and that she could tell him everything - and often didn't know when to stop. He really hadn't needed that whole sanitary-towels-or-tampons monologue in the drug store.
"Should I get it out, or should I just keep cuddling you?"

That is, until he opened the door.
