It had been a long, long day. Ryan had always firmly believed that you should get your birthday off of school, and today had only reinforced that belief. Math tests, essays overdue, orchestra rehearsal that went on for ages.
By the time he'd dumped himself at home and portaled to the treehouse, he just wanted to crawl under the blankets on the mattress in the corner - for late-night study sessions, sleepovers and the like - and sleep through the rest of his sixteenth birthday.
"Did you have a good day? I had a good day! Birthdays are so much fun, even when they're not mine!"
Carly surged forward throwing her arms around his neck and kissing his cheek a little shyly, before pulling back to look at him. "I made dinner. Well, I ordered it from the Chinese and then kept it warm, but that totally counts."
Ryan grinned, hugging her back, tightly, and secretly pleased to note that he was two and a half inches taller than her, mwa-ha-ha, FINALLY.
"Yeah, it was great. Better now." It was thoroughly not cheesy of him to get all goofy-smiled and dopey around her. They were best friends. With benefits ranging from the kissing type thing to the always-available date thing. Nothing else. Yet.
"Mmmm, Chinese's my favorite. And it absolutely counts. You kept it from getting cold and icky."
Carly loved everything about Ryan. She loved that he was hers, and that she could tell him everything - and often didn't know when to stop. He really hadn't needed that whole sanitary-towels-or-tampons monologue in the drug store.
"Should I get it out, or should I just keep cuddling you?"
"Mmmm, the second one," he says, happily, having blocked out the memories of said feminine item discussion through months of hard work and aversion therapy. "I'm not THAT hungry yet."
Carly turns and holds up her hands, stilling the Chinese cartons and causing the candles to flicker. She loved the way her power was starting to move, but she knew it would take years of practice before she could do everything she wanted with it.
Like undress Ryan with her mind. Not that she was thinking about that at all - or had been picturing him naked constantly for the past twenty-four hours. Not at all.
He watches, stepping forward and slinging his arm loosely around her shoulders. He also loves her powers, loves watching her exercise it and cultivate it, loves the thrill he gets from being around her.
Oh, of course she hadn't been. Just like he hadn't been imagining her clothesless for the past twenty-four hours. More like the past three years.
"Did you get orange chicken?" Like any red-blooded male, Ryan's need for food can be all-encompassing.
"Yup. And crispy chilli beef, duck with pancakes, spring rolls, prawn crackers, and singapore noodles with everything. I got them to hold the snake, though."
Carly beamed and pulled out Ryan's chair, bowing slightly.
Carly giggled and took her own seat. "I think my dads might get funny about that. Why is she ordering fresh anyway? Your mom loves processed sugar as much as I do."
"Oh. Yeah." Ryan gave an involuntary shudder at the notion of having all four of Carly's dads displeased with him. "Eh, it's a new kick she's on. She has, like, cucumber and seafoam salad...and then Twinkies for dessert."
By the time he'd dumped himself at home and portaled to the treehouse, he just wanted to crawl under the blankets on the mattress in the corner - for late-night study sessions, sleepovers and the like - and sleep through the rest of his sixteenth birthday.
That is, until he opened the door.

She shut her eyes and pictured the hot box. It then whirred with excitement behind her and slowly began unpacking its contents.

Now that she can smell the good, she's torn between Ryan and Crispy Chilli Beef.
"Eat now?"

"You're the best, y'know that? Can I take you home to order my food forever? Mom always gets weird raw food nowadays."
