Nursing tips for my friends who are expecting:

* Purchase three nursing bras and keep them in the bathroom.  Whenever you are able to sneak in a shower, take the one you're wearing in with you and wash it with soap.  When you get out, you'll have a clean one to wear; and you can hang the other one up to dry.  The third one?  It's so you'll have a ( Read more... )

A month or more of heavy bleeding. Yes, I remember this one from puberty. (My mom remembers this from menopause. Whee.)

People tell me, "But it's heavier." I tell them "You don't know my family history." On the other hand, my doctors are very pleased with my placental growth, so it's good for something.

You might also mention, for those who don't know, that tampons are Right Out. Too much chance of TSS, I gather. As someone who has had a heavy flow, I recommend the pads with wings. Bigger than you'd get normally. Since I usually use the petite (I *love* modern technology; the ones I used in high school were so bulky) I'm going with the jumbo size for post-partum.

Incidentally, out of the shower it's belly and legs, clean blood, put on necessary stuff, then dry the rest off. By cleaning the belly and legs you prevent your undies from getting damp.

Not looking forward to the post-partum "period." But hey, baby!

Seriously, TSS was the least of my concerns, and I suspect it will be for you, too. The basic consideration is that there is no way in hell a person would want to put anything in there at that point in time. OK, my damage was a little severe due to the long labor, but I can't imagine any woman in her right mind thinking, "Hey, I'll stick a tampon in there!"

Thank you for the tip! I need to remind myself to buy at least 2-3 more nursing bras before I need them. I keep forgetting how close I am to needing them.

Craig's sister just gave us about 30 of the flat-fold diapers. I'm looking at them thinking, "Those will make great burp cloths."
