The Proust Questionnaire

Mar 23, 2009 17:08

This one comes from Vanity Fair (www.vanityfair.com/magazine/archive/proust_questionnaire) via frescadp . Possibly the most exhaustive meme ever: 35 questions, the answers to which - according to Marcel Proust himself - reveals a person's true nature. This will be a long-time project that I'll hack away at, one or a few questions at a time. The whole set ( Read more... )

I've already seen this questionnaire at some other places, but so far, I was too lazy (and in some ways to insecure about myself) to try and answer it.

I like the principle of the Lush shops, but I can't stand to spend longer than five minutes in one, because the combined smell of all the different soaps just kills my nose.

Oh, and now that you mention him, I have to read more Umberto Eco - so far I've really enjoyed the Name of the Rose and Foucault's Pendulum (read both of them twice), but I have still two more of his books in my shelf, which I bought somewhere at the flea market but somehow I never found the time to read.

I see what you mean about the explosion of smells in the Lush shops! They used to have a big sign in one of the London units saying "No, we do NOT get a headache from working here", because they were tired of the customers asking that. :D Somehow it's part of the experience for me, it's a strong smell but not the artificial, headache-inducing kind. Then, on the other hand, I don't have a very acute sense of smell.

For me, Eco's books are very time-consuming and it takes a lot of concentration to keep up with the plots, so I haven't read any of his books more than twice. If you have Baudolino, I recommend that! It's somewhat lighter, more of an adventure tale with silly (but still very learned) middle ages humour.

Ha, the epic (and absurd) battle against unwanted hair! That's all too familiar to me, too. Not that I trouble myself with it that much these days; one of the big pros of being single is not having to worry about someone discovering that they're in a relationship with a wookie.

Nothing more constructive to say, I'm afraid... This is a great meme and I look forward to the next installment, but I'd never dare answering it myself. It'd take me an entire a year.

And you have fair hair! Being a blonde wookiee is OK in my opinion.

I'm planning on taking around a year to answer this, actually...

Ooooh! Thanks! I love that people are answering these amazing questions, and your choice to do it piecemeal is very wise. I answered them all at one blow, very quickly, so I didn't give them much thought. If I were to answer them again, I'm sure my answers would be different. Hmmmm.... maybe I will do that--answer them every birthday ( ... )

I was impressed at how interesting and thoughtful youre answers were, even though you seemed to have come up with them on the spot! I read some of the celebrity answers at VF's webpage, and they were quite hurried and not that interesting (not even Umberto Eco's, which I'd had high hopes about ( ... )
