Any gentleman, I believe, would be justifiably astonished to wake and find himself being tooled around town in a spanking new barouche, surrounded by strange sights and stranger personages. When my husband Wickham and I return from the north (as I suppose we must do eventually, although I am loathe to leave the officers and the gay parties that the regiment throws), perhaps you will permit us to promenade in your fine new barouche? It looks very diverting and I do so long for amusement.

I would be sorry to deprive any near relation of amusement, no matter how much of a test their husband might be to my pride. Therefore, tho' I cannot bring myself to accompany Mr. Wickham in public, I will not deny my sister-in-law and her husband the use of my barouche. I will simply sigh in a noble and martyred fashion whenever I think of it.
