This has been bothering me, in an "I kind of twitch everytime I hear this but then dismiss it" sort of way: the misuse of the word zen

Only if you're meditating correctly, I would imagine. And if one was going to use zen to mean meditation, one might as well just use "meditation."

Although to study Laos I'm going to need to learn French to some extent. =_= The only language I wasn't interested in learning. Drat.
