Did you read the police report? "Ya, I'll talk to your MOM outside!" Good one, Gates. Way to defy black stereotypes.

The details of the report are a bit different from the details of the article. I wonder if the police report is accurate.

Anyway, if a dude is pissed off because you just accused him of breaking into his own home, that alone doesn't seem like a good reason to arrest him. Maybe the law as it stands now permits this, but it doesn't sound necessary to me. In this case, he provided ample evidence that he did, in fact, live there, which leaves the cops without much productive to do other than leave.

Odd, they took down the police report. I should've saved a copy or something. But I saw it.

I would totally agree with the guy, except ... don't argue with the cops. They were called for a reported break-in, and there's a guy trying to jimmy a door open. Perfectly legitimate for the cop to question the guy.

And you're actually wrong about the guy providing ample evidence. The police report (before it was taken down, so you'll have to take my word for it) said that when the guy said he lived there, the cop asked him for his drivers license (which would prove he lived there), and the guy refused, saying he didn't have to show him anything, and instead showed him is Harvard U ID (proving his name but not residence) and said, "Do you know who I am?" and threatened the cop with disciplinary action by saying he was going to call his superiors. The lesson is DON'T DO THAT, not don't be black.

And guess what: it's not just black people who don't follow cops instructions who get in trouble. It's little old ladies too! The cop says, "Step back, or you will be tasered" and she says, "Go ahead, taser me!" She was warned 5 times to ( ... )

Point is if you don't follow cops' instructions and demonstrate a lack of authority, the cops assume you're more likely to be impulsive or possibly dangerous, which is probably a safe thing to do. So ... yeah. Don't be stupid. And to save from having the argument you might pose about actual police brutality and not having to follow cops' instructions if it's completely unreasonable ... neither of these cases were like that. One was please show me your drivers' license, and the other one was please sign your ticket (followed by please take a step back). Neither of those were unreasonable.
