the mad lady of rapture

Once, she was a scientist. In times of chaos, it was science that she held to when nothing else was sacred. Science was truth, pure, without malice and without political intent, logical and as clear to her as the sunlight on her skin. It was how she defined herself, the way she protected herself when no one else could and when her life was reduced ( Read more... )

When I first got here, I thought the place was insane, in the way you say, 'Hey, that's insane! That's incredible!' about some story your friend would tell you.

The longer I'm down here, the more I'm finding it's insane in the way you say, 'That is insane, you person performing surgery with a chainsaw.' Only it's worse, because the chainsaw can cut right down to the genes. This place is a nightmare, and I'm pretty sure it's one I've had, only it was an army of mes clambering about the ceiling, and not just one person in a masquerade mask, briefly glimpsed from a distance.

That really shouldn't have raised a pang. I found one of their tonics, actually. I'm not about to go dosing myself. I intend to study the heck out of this thing...

...as soon as I tear myself away from this orphanage I've been staring at for I don't know how long. Little Sisters. I don't know what went on here, but this whole thing gives me the wiggins. I should be finding out what that is, hunting down some more of those audio recordings, searching the place ( ... )

It was really only a matter of time. She knew this as well as she knew that the splicers would tear each other apart for a few drops of ADAM. But seeing a stranger staring at the orphanage, unknowing of its purpose, was still a jarring experience.

But this time, she didn't hide as she usually did, staying to the shadows. This time she decided to meet the young woman directly. It was, after all, dangerous. The Little Ones sometimes still played here and that meant their protectors may be along as well.

"You. Girl." She called out in her accented voice. "You should not be here."

"Hey, neither should this place, right?" By which I mean the whole underwater crazy-land. "So it kind of evens out," I say, although with an edge of nerves. I'm a little wary. I don't know everyone on the island, of course, but I'm pretty sure this woman isn't part of the authorities up there. Which means she's either just plain bossy, or a local. Or both.

She's not wearing a mask or shooting lightning at me, though, so that's a plus.

Actually, she could wear a mask, if she wanted -- it'd be a bit hypocritical of me to say otherwise -- but the lightning is non-negotiable.

"I hardly think so, child. I was referring to those who will harm you, should they arrive."

Brigid looked around, it had been quiet, certainly, it was why she was out and gathering supplies. She was close, she knew she was close, she just needed more time.

Bah, she could think about that later. Now there was a child who had little knowledge of the danger she faced in this place.

"Come, we should not be in the open like this."

It's taken me hours, more than I had intended. I left Bucky and Natalia in Hephaestus, and have made my way through Rapture's seemingly endless depths to Olympic Heights, and now I find myself at a loss. There is evidence scattered across the ruins of this place of a lot of dark and terrible things, but from the discarded audio diaries I've heard, the information I've been able to piece together, there is one person above all others I want answers from ( ... )

She felt like a ghost most days, drifting through Rapture and trying to piece together enough supplies to continue her work. She considers herself lucky, though, she'd found a place, a sanctuary where she could work without the Splicers finding her. A place the Little Ones could and did visit for food and shelter when they needed it, which meant the Big Daddies kept it safe. A dangerous line that one, one she knew she tread lightly whenever she needed to examine one of the girls.

But today, she was in search of ADAM. Usually the Little Ones helped her in this, but they had been scarce, likely going about to watch the strangers that were slowly becoming more prevalent in Rapture. She'd met a couple, but did not seek them out, preferring to stay separate. Her own work was far more important than helping foolish tourists who should know better than to wander about. They were not her concern, or even on her mind as she emerged from the darkness, only to hear a voice speaking nearby.

Where are you, Doctor? Wunderbar. Were actually ( ... )

The doctor- I recognize her voice immediately- cuts such a strikingly nostalgic silhouette that I feel disoriented for a moment. Not enough to miss the firearm, though. I don't have anything on me- the shield is Bucky's, and I've found more than enough built into the environment to prevent me from having to pick up a gun, yet. I watch her, but don't make a move to approach.

"My name is Steve Rogers, and I was looking for you, Dr. Tenenbaum."

"Why?"

She didn't see any weapons on him, odd in a place like this... unless the visitors had discovered ADAM, the plasmids, the tonics and then? Well, searching her out made a little more sense. The fools. Were they like Fontaine, looking to start the chaos all over again?

Those she had met previously did not seem interested, but if there was one thing she had discovered, it was that people came in many shades. Many desires. Many, many forms of madness.

Amy has seen a great deal more than other girls from tiny towns in Gloucestershire. They had called her mad growing, had only let her stand on the outskirts unless she wormed her way into the centre. There was so much out there to know and see that it was impossible to not want to walk headfirst into it.

This was just another adventure. She'd made it down there with the help of a guide. Had kissed Rory on the cheek and told him that she'd be fine and would be back before scampering off. That felt like hours ago. Now she's simply followed her feet and ended up some place else.

This whole underground place should give her the creeps. It did, sort of, it reminded her of being trapped under the ground and losing Rory. But none of that had happened, had it? Pressing a finger to her temple she stopped and tried to sort things out. A moment later her eyes were open and she took another step.

"Hullo?" she called, not really expecting an answer. It just seemed rude to not say anything at all.

Another verdammt visitor. And another one alone. Brigid didn't even hesitate this time, walking out with a stern expression on her face. Was this child even armed? She looked like a Splicer would rip her in two without even trying, like the first girl she met from the surface. Did none of those people have any sense.

"You. Child. Where is your escort? Why are you here alone in this place?"

Taking a step back, her eyes momentarily widened and felt a bit ashamed as if she had been caught doing something that she shouldn't. Which she technically was, but that was besides the point. It wasn't as if Amy had been anticipating being caught doing this. And there was always someone close by. Or closeish. Same difference.

Gesturing in the direction that she came from, she smiled weakly. "Um, he's back thataway," she answered, taking another step back before stopping. "I suppose he's just taking his time. Though I'd go on ahead and have a bit of a look. Sorry about that."

"Then you should return to him, this is not a place to be wandering around alone."

Foolish people. Wandering around, fighting the splicers, stirring up things. How was she supposed to get any of her own research done when she had to stop and herd the strangers around every time she left her sanctuary?

"Go now, before the splicers yet you, ja?"
