Jenna, I highly suggest you read the essay by Clare Pollard about the use of the male muse in poetry...I think you'd find it interesting. It all goes back to the act of looking as being an essentially "male" act. Pollard argues that women writers are often looked down upon for using a male as a source of inspiration.
