Wow! There's a lot of you new here. This is exciting.
If you're just joining me,
I'd appreciate it if you read my friending policy in my userinfo. I'm a grad student in the middle of dissertation hell, and I can barely get through my friends list as it is. I am really really glad to have new readers and look forward to getting to know people, and

BTW: After the mens, my current male fave is Takahashi! I'm positive his routines would have won me over anyway, but it was your little cheat-sheet on the skaters/youtube links that led me to look for him, so thank you.

Mostly, I'm really pleased that we're all able to squee together. It wasn't like this in 2006 - I think there's more room in LJ-based fandom now for acting fannish about things other than TV shows.
I adore Takahashi. It's a pity that he's shy about giving interviews in English, because he's hilarious and charming and classy off the ice as well as on. (I speak some Japanese.) I saw him beat Lysacek at 2007 Skate America and have had a special place in my heart for him ever since.

I know Takahashi said that he doesn't plan to compete in another Olympics, but I hope we still see him around for a few more years because he's just PHENOMENAL!

Takahashi is being very coy about his future plans because if he even hints, the Japanese press will run with it.

Now, I couldn't explain why I thought that way (again, I've only learned by osmosis and I can't figure out the scoring system), so thank you for this post. It was highly educational to read. :-)
And I'm enjoying the heck out of your skating posts, too.

My point here, really, is that Johnny shouldn't have scored much higher than he did - the problem is that other skaters should have scored lower. Johnny is perfectly capable of racking up the points necessary to win, but (for all intents and purposes) chooses not to do so. He puts principle ahead of strategy. It's very frustrating.

... *I* would read that >.> It's totally what they would do, too, lol.
I'm trying just to figure out who should be the target of the, like, letter-writing campaign to get Johnny into the gala XD I find he's at his best when he's not competing.

One thing about Chan, besides being overscored (which I expected and was sad to see that it discounted other skaters like Oda), the press are being complete jerks about his placement. All the newscasters and headlines are saying, "A Disappointing Night for Patrick Chan." Dudes, it's his first Olympics. He's 19. He didn't really compete all season. HE STILL GOT FIFTH, just look at Brian Joubert's placement, god. Canadian Press= the Asian parents of the world.

This is the funniest thing I've ever read. *g*

Oh, Skate Canada, did we really expect anything less? After all that money they spent getting him onto the podium (and I'm not implying corruption here, so much as the cash they poured into his training and PR) and he still choked.
