This is mostly the post where I go on and on about the World Figure Skating Championships. But first, some things for those of you who see the words "figure" and "skating" together in this journal and don't click past the cut tag

So, first you made me actually want to try a cup of coffee (which is kind of ridiculous), and then I clicked on the cut and was reminded of how I actually watched some of the last Winter Olympics and enjoy watching figure skating and isn't it nice to watch stuff that *other* people are also watching and commenting on at the same time -- i.e., I'm gonna end up watching at least some of Worlds, aren't I?

Coffee is an acquired taste, which means it takes some work. And, you know, Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts are not the way to go.

I hope so! Part of the reason I make these posts is so that people who are on the fence about watching will have a sort of "viewers guide" to who and what they're seeing.
(Self-hating homophobic timing? *curious*)Hmm, difficult to really give an impression if you didn't see it live. In the Free Skate at US Nationals, Lysacek skated immediately before Johnny Weir. They were the two favorites going in, and they have a rivalry that is somewhat real and somewhat ESPN-amplified. If you haven't gathered it from my journal so far, Johnny Weir is unapologetically queeny and fabulous, although he will not discuss his sexuality publicly. Up until, heh, this January, Lysacek had been similarly evasive, and while he's less overtly queer, he certainly "reads" gay. For the past, oh, six months or so, there had been accumulating evidence that he was either dating Tanith (who I fully believe has the power to turn gay men straight -- see blonde in icon of previous comment) or grooming a beard. Which, you know, whatever, sexuality is fluid and complex, but please do not spend half a year denying it and saying you're single and then choose the night of the Free Skate to shine the big marquee letters that you are a Big

Oh, caffeine. *smiles the smile of the well-and-truly-addicted*

Hey babe, this is a good opportunity for me to tell you that while I don't speak up much (me and figure skating not being on what you would call speaking terms), I still peek in now and then to see how you're doing - had a ball with you at WriterCon, and hope to see you again eventually. *smooch*
Oh, don't worry about it, I always just go ahead and assume people are reading. Thanks for checking in, though - it was great meeting you, and I hope I'll see you again at the next Writercon if not sooner.
*sigh* I love your first sentimental top five. That's pretty much perfect, except I'd have to throw Takahashi somewhere in there 'cause I kind of like him.
Please Johnny, PLEASE don't fuck up the freeskate. I'm begging you.
Thanks. It's personal, you know? I don't expect it to work for anyone else, but I'm glad it works for you. And as I said, as much as it warms my heart, part of me will be pretty offended if Joubert doesn't win.
I really do hope that both Johnny and Steph skate clean. It would mean a lot for them as well as for their fans.
I know that Worlds are over now and I am late, but I'm a little bored at work and browsing various people's LJs and I saw this post, read it... And you totally win the price for the most amusing pre-Worlds post. I had to clap a hand over my mouth to stop myself from giggling out loud.
My favorite bits: It's not just that the four best ladies' skaters at the moment are all teenagers, but that they're all unpretentious jocks who collectively have the potential to nail shut the coffin of the Michelle Kwan era, mostly by landing their triple axels on top of it.
surprise pronouncements of heterosexuality this season XD The manner and timing of this made me angry. :/
Also, there's more than a ghost of a chance that if he wins, he'll be so excited he'll rip off the top half of his costume. He should have done that, for the sake of my eyes... his costumes this season have been making me want to stab them out.
Evan "Needs To Shave" Lysacek should be his new alias.
Tomas Verner, of the Czech Republic, who keeps astonishing himself

Wait, now, wait - what did I miss? What figure skater said he was straight?
(Also: stop making me interested in figure skating. *shakes fist*)

Miss Evan Lysacek announced at this year's Nationals that he is "dating" Tanith Belbin. With really self-hating-homophobic timing.
(Also: stop making me interested in figure skating. *shakes fist*)
Haven't you heard? My new job in fandom is making people interested in figure skating.

Oh, honey. You're a figure skater! You don't have to do that!

But it's an EVIL job. Have you no mercy, woman? No basic human kindness? *shakes fist some more*

Dude, in IM, my friends and I refer to him as NTS. Or "Miss Evan," on the days we like him.
