No rescue dog this time

The American Eskimo dog we were trying to adopt ended up going to a previous applicant, who had originally been turned down because of potential issues with other dogs in their household. That adoption is back on again, apparently

I envy you. I so want a dog, but am allergic to most breeds and can't have one in my current place, anyway. It's a shame you don't live in California. There's a guy (saint?) here who rehabilitates strays and abused dogs and they are always looking for people to foster or adopt. He even posts these awesome, tearjerking videos of the rescues in action, then the check-in later when their wounds heal.
