I started reading and then discarded two books in less than ten minutes last night. The first, Grimspace by Ann Aguirre, because I never would have ordered it from Paperbackswap.com if I had known it was written in first person present tense (there are few more effective ways to ensure that I cast your book aside with a curse), and the second, A ( Read more... )

Oh, sympathies on the disappointing books.

I believe I read Atkinson's earlier work on North Africa. If it's the same author, I know what you mean about quality prose!

I figured the Atkinson book would be a safe bet, since I loved An Army at Dawn: The War in North Africa, 1942-1943.

Still waiting for the publication of the third and final book.
