I don't like Mondays

So today we discovered ice damage to a corner of the roof of one section of our house. (Note to self: Start asking around about a good metal-roofing contractor.) Plus we have decided that it's probably time to euthanize the old dog. Surprisingly, I am doing pretty well. The mental/physical crash-and-burn of the last couple of weeks is over ( Read more... )

Thanks. Our vet only makes house calls for livestock, so I'm going to have to take her to the office.

Thanks. She was already fairly old when we got her, and I think she was lucky to get us as her last people. It's a pretty cushy gig here. Now I just have to do the final thing I can do for her, which is to let her go quickly and painlessly.

Sorry about your dog -- it never's easy, whether they're young or old, letting them go.

Good luck with the roofing. We've just had water back up in the garage drain and the long-term prognosis is to replace the entire drainpipe (which is made of the crap corrugated tubing you usually see in weeping tiles, not in proper drains) and, as there's unevenness in our driveway, we were thinking of redoing that at some point a few years hence but not right now, please! (Please let the drain hold a few years longer!) New roof is next year for us (fencing the backyard is this year's gift to the money pit).

As for the comfort movie, I recommend Jane Austen -- I always find Sense and Sensibility to be a delicious choice (Alan Rickman is such a wonderful Brandon) or Persuasion with Amanda Root.

I adore that version of Persuasion, which is my favorite of all the JA novels. Excellent advice!

We were so happy to replace our VHS tape of Persuasion with a DVD last year. The videotape had real problems with the sound levels and we were constantly fiddling. As well, the transfer seemed so very, very dark. The DVD is lovely and we rewatch it at least twice a year!

I first saw it at a film festival when it came out, and even my father, who was all "Jane Austen? Whatever!" ended up loving it.

I've reached the scene in which Lady Russell tries to persuade Anne to marry the devious cousin. This truly is one of my all-time favorite films. :D
