I've seen these pictures before, but what still puzzles me that noone save for the Germans and Mexicans had any noteworthy quantity of drinks pictured.
Take a closer look at the North Carolina family's picture: there's a lot of Gatorade and fruit-juice bottles on the counter on the right-hand side of the photo, along with several 12-packs of canned soda and what looks like at least three gallons of milk.
Also, don't forget that in several parts of the world pictured there (Britain, China, and Japan come immediately to mind), tea is widely and regularly consumed at mealtimes -- but since tea comes in a box, it wouldn't immediately stand out as a "drink" item in one of those photos. :) (And neither would powdered drink mixes or juice concentrates,, since they come in smaller bottles, canisters, or packets.)
