Despite its near complete lack of real plot, I enjoyed the J.J. Abrams "Star Trek" more than I had expected

but the awful special effects were part of the joy of the original series! still, i plan to see this one. we may even go to a theater for it, which is almost unheard of in this house.

I agree part of the charm of TOS was the cheap "special" FX, but the theatrical films always had pretty good effects.

This new one was plotless, and the bad guy was lame and almost a nonentity, but it was mostly about establishing a new crew, and it did that pretty well.

yeah, Star Trek was good

...and as a "Star Wars" guy, I really think the revamp added just the right amount of action. Nimoy's Spock cameo was classy!
