It's interesting that you mention feeling "safer" being out as UU than Wiccan. When I found out it was a UU church that had experienced the shooting, I had the exact same feeling. That feeling that nowhere is safe - even in a church which promotes peace.
We only recently (after many years of dancing around it) made our way into a UU family as pagans. My husband was interviewing for a job in Knoxville and it was a toss up between there and DC (he took the DC job). We'd agreed that as soon as he got settled, what with him being by himself, he'd look into congregations and we'd all start going as a family. This has really shocked me partly because I can see how easily it would have been for him to be in Knoxville, partly because I never expect to be on the receiving end of a hate crime just because of what church we choose and because -- it's a _CHURCH_!! I mean -- int this country...who goes and shoots people in a church?? I just don't get that.
And yeah -- we're more willing to name a church we're attending than to ever say pagan or wiccan or anything else to anyone else (particularly his family who are fundamentalist christians...) so I totally get you there.
have you ever noticed that all the time, people that have come to ASW events before get so lost and can't find Dragonstead? There are a lot more alarm bells and safeguards than you think at first.

This has been a horrible tragedy.
