I'm working on my Yuletide requests and offers at the moment. I'm quite conflicted this year, weirdly the option to ask for up to 6 things has thrown me completely because I can thinking of 6 things I want to ask for but do I REALLY want all 6 or might I end up with a request I've put in as filler? So I'm determined that any requests will be ones I ( Read more... )

I used to love Rosemary Sutcliffe but I've never heard of that book. I think I must have only read the Roman ones.

Apparently it's just Knight's Fee without the "a" I didn't check first *g* but it's a great book and I think you'd really like it.

(I am, incidentally, absolutely loving the Joan Aiken short stories and they are making a hideous week almost bearable)

If you've only read Rosemary Sutcliffe's roman books I'd also highly recommend Blood Feud and Warrior Scarlet. Oh and Song for a Dark Queen though my love for that comes partly from doing it as a play when I was at school.

I know! Looking back I'm surprised we did it but we did and it was amazing. It was a mixture of ages from 12-16 and I was barely 12 and you're right it was very violent. I remember auditioning for one of the daughters and having to scream as Iw as dragged away and I also vividly remember the day the rest of the cast actually got to watch the "rape" scene for the firs time and you could have heard a pin drop- it was incredible. It's a brilliant novel and it was a really well written adaptation.

I know that about the e, why do I always forget!? Thank you for the comm rec though. I fear I have a bit of a thing about that film though and resent all the film-based fic (my problem I realise not the film's!)

Eh, only after signing up and reading your post did I realise that I could ask for 6 things, not the usual 4 I always did.... Oh dear.

I did offer 10 different fandoms though and when I say different I do meant different! LOL

Well you can always change/add to your sign up until they close on Monday... *g*

Offering as many fandoms as possible makes the mods love you I think and it makes it quite exciting when your assignment arrives too and you can't remember what it was you even offered!

You know, now that I've decided which ones I wanted to request am at a loss as to which ones I should add? Maybe?

Ugh, why is this request thing so difficult?

LOL yeah, even though I think that I know which fandom am gonna get for my assignment. Possibly the same one as the last couple of times! :D

Oh I ABSOLUTELY know that feeling, I think I'll probably just ask for 4 in the end too but I can't quite settle on which 4.

I've actually had a different fandom every time so far which is kind of interesting (and unnerving)

I remember reading all of the Sutcliff books when I was younger, though the only one that really stuck with me was Eagle of the Ninth (which fandom has produced some lovely fic, both pre- and post-movie adaptation) but she does have a tendency to want to rip your heart out and stamp on it in some of them, doesn't she? IIRC, she did the same with Mark of the Horselord where Things Do Not End Well.

BTW, there's a community, sutcliff-fics which you might be interested in...

Oh absolutely, she's incredibly good at causing the utmost heartbreak for her characters and her readers but she does it so beautifully I keep going back for more (which is a little worrying now I think about it!)

Eagle of the Ninth is a beautiful book. I think one of the reasons I resent the film is that some newer fans seemed to find the book difficult, or that it contained difficult elements, and I was annoyed because I love it so much!

I'll definitely take a look at that community.

It's no wonder that so many of us who read her books as youngsters ended up as h/c (and slash) fans, is it? ;)

As for The Eagle, I grew up loving the book best of all her books so really don't get how it could be 'difficult', except for the fact that there's actually a m/f relationship in the book that doesn't make it to the movie. Not that this has stopped fans of the movie writing OT3 fic, which works for me, so there you go...

I've signed up for the first time ever; I have only asked for 4 fandoms, one of which is *very* obscure (as in, it doesn't have any fic in AO3, or anywhere else I can find), but have offered 8, I think. Am really rather scared....

Good luck! It's always a little terrifying (or a lot terrifying maybe) but remember there are lots of us out there suffering too and when you get your fic at the end it's so awesome.

Plus even though youc an't talk about what you're writing publicly support group type posts can spring up if they're need :D
