Why won't you see The Audience? I have been hoping it will be shown in Brussels through NT live, as I am experiencing a dearth of English-language theatre.
A few reasons. The irrational one being I don't like Helen Mirren but I also just find it a really odd thing to write a play about- a series of meetings we have no actual way of knowing the truth about and that are still happening today so the play can't really have any kind of conclusion as far as I can tell.
I'm told it's brilliant and Helen Mirren can clearly play the Queen very well and apparently there's some interesting stuff about various pms appearing and who you assume they are before you hear their names but it just... doesn't appeal. I'm MUCH sadder about the fact that I can't get to This House.
The only award I wish Curious Incident hadn't won is Best New Play, as I really wanted This House to win that - as much as Curious is a brilliant play, This House just had the edge on it for me. But all the others are incredibly well deserved - the set and lighting are amazing and Luke Treadaway really does give an astonishing performance. Strangely, I was much less interested in the musical awards this year, probably because I haven't seen any of them! :)
Part of me is very excited about Tom Hiddleston being back on stage and the rest of me is quaking in fear at the thought of all the fangirls going to see it. I can be very horrible and judgemental sometimes. *g*
I was talking to N about this and she agreed with you exactly- they deserved all the awards but she wished This House had won Best New Play but it still made her (and me) a little... awkward that everyone else gets nothing.
I'd done a LOT better with the musicals than the plays this year.
Oh don't. I'm trying really hard not to think about it. I'm getting increasingly unnerved that fangirls will ruin my lovely Friends Meet the Cast at the Globe after the Tempest :-/
I am a fangirl but I kind of hate us sometimes (or at leas the crazier end of the spectrum)
It's weird isn't? If a play (or musical last year) is genuinely that good, why shouldn't it win all the awards? But it does feel awkward when it happens. I wonder if also the feeling comes from them being from subsidised theatre, as if it's unfair somehow because they had the time and space to develop it properly. IDK.
I love fandom and fangirls in all sorts of ways, but I kind of hate us sometimes too - or I hate how the crazy section gives the rest of us a bad name. Social media has not helped with this! I'm sure your Friends things will be fine though - I wouldn't have thought a lot of them would have bothered with joining.
Well I suppose the subsidised theatre thing might be true generally but I'm pretty sure it's not what's niggling at me. Let's see if something wins all the awards next year and then maybe I'll work out what it is.
I saw someone asking how to join the Friends so they could attend the other day but I have hopes it was already sold out.
