So the Olivier Awards then...
Well everyone says The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time is brilliant and I can't wait to see it so I guess I'm happy? It won 7 out of the 8 awards it was nominated for (and if it had won in the theatre choreography award over Top Hat then there would have been something seriously wrong) and I think equalled Matilda's wins from last year.
I am very happy a subsidised theatre show won so many awards (are you paying attention Maria Miller) but always a little sad when one show sweeps the board because there were so many other good shows out there!
Mind you I'm still not seeing The Audience even if it did net two acting awards.
I was happy for Billy Elliot and their Audience Award (finally) and Michael Frayn definitely deserved his special award (and I loved Roger Allam's tribute speech about him- Noises Off really is the funniest play I've ever seen).
Michael Ball & Imelda Staunton getting both acting awards in the musicals category for Sweeney Todd was well deserved (though I think I'd have been happy with most of those nominees winning) and I'm very glad Top Hat got Best New Musical to go with its choreography award (even if I'm still dubious about it really being a NEW musical).
What else? Going by sound only Idina Menzel was a great guest star to have on but Matthew Morrison maybe overreached himself. Oh and Michael Ball can still sing Love Changes Everything beautifully <3
I've got to watch the highlights tonight to actually see all the musicals (but of course it will sadly be without the swearing and all the best bits I suspect).
Award shows are always weird though- the people you want to win so rarely do (well the people I want to win rarely do) and WOW do some of the speeches go on. Still no Ronan Keating & Kimberley Walsh this year so that's one thing!
I also spent a bit of time this morning trawling tumblr for pictures of pretty Olivier Award dresses and getting frustrated at tumblr's Tom Hiddleston obsession... though I am VERY excited to hear that he's going to be back on the stage at some point this year <3
Anyway
Sheridan Smith was clearly the prettiest with
Summer Strallen a close runner up (what, me, biased? never!)
