The dependence upon the digital cash register for even 20-somethings is astonishing! I was at a retail shop when the power went out. My clerk used a key to open the cash register, but could not figure out the correct change. I had to show her and I watched the manager showing other clerks...sigh.

I will admit, I wouldn't be able to do that math in my head(I just don't see numbers that way, they mish-mash in my brain and I get confused) but at the very least I can count back the change. Granted, that's what I have to do at ren fest all the time so I've had practice but I learned quick.

When I have to count it out I normally do it from smallest coins to bills:
0.58+0.02=0.60+.40=1.00+6.00=7.00+13.00=change for a $20

I get frustrated with that, but then I played a game with myself, and still do sometimes, trying to calculate the change due to me before the register did. I won more times than not. Course I usually catch it if they have a price in the computer different than the price listed on the shelf or in the ad too.
