Waterloo scenesters

Is it just me, or are there suddenly a lot of scenesters in Waterloo? Last night I was at Mel's and the boys and girls with random piercings and silly haircuts in black or blond, impeccably dressed in black, retro-inspired attire, just kept coming in. And today, I saw a bunch hanging out in/in front of Sweet Dreams. Walk around in the SLC, and ( Read more... )

Your last sentence is bang on here.

These are the same people who wore low-hanging jeans and baseball caps backwards two years ago, except now, something new is in fashion, and they hopped the bandwagon.

Hmm... I initially wrote "another reason to hate humans" here but that's not an accurate statement at all; I've always hated bandwagon jumpers.

You bring up another thing though... Sweet Dreams. You'll note every few months or so they change up the demographics they cater to. It's frightening how well they work at staying in business.

I notice it mostly by the type of music they let rip in there. Back when I was in first year, they relied very heavily on the Chinese Students' Association, to the point where CSA members got (and still get) discounts.

Later (2nd year) they realized that if they target other groups, their sales might go up, so they started catering (by first getting white staff members, then removing the gambling machine, then making the place more moody, etc.) to the white kids who want to be Asian. This is the first time I saw non-BC white people frequent the place.

Then (this year, mostly), I noticed that they decided the 'scenester' kids were a great way to make money selling coffee hybrids, so if you pay attention, you now hear the more popular but-not-too-popular music (which people still call 'indie' because said people are fucking retards) like Metric and Franz Ferdinand playing inside. It's become a hangout for stupidity. The amount of teenagers who ask me how to write the Chinese character for 'sex' every time I go there is appallingly

Why would people ask you to write the Chinese character for sex?

Scenesters - I'll be on the lookout. I've been in the lab for the past week studying, so.

However since you mentioned Sweet Dreams I'll mention that is the greatest ripoff that I have ever encountered.

My 17-year-old niece is now exhibiting serious scenester behaviour (or rather she was at Christmas).

Welcome to the new mainstream!
