Title: If not again, then this night.
Fandom: Star Wars
Rating: (PG)
Time Period: End of AotC: before she returns to Naboo.
Summary: He seeks to leave and she convinces him to stay.

Author's Note: This is quick ‘n’ dirty (for definition see the F. A. Q.).

This came so very strongly to mind that I felt compelled to write it. The title came from a line of dialogue below. And then the icon fell into place for it.

So, I had no choice but to write it.

Her hand on his arm, he stops; his eyes follow the line of her arm to her shoulder and only then does he meet her gaze.

“We cannot part like this.”

He smiles; it doesn’t reach his eyes. “I cannot fool either of us any longer,” he replies. “Anakin will accompany you to Naboo in the morning.”

She steps forward to lessen the distance between them. “Who was fooled, Obi-Wan?” She asks, her head tilted slightly to the left. “I knew what you were, what I am. We wove a spell between us and it was never broken until now.”

He stays still, his gaze dropping briefly. “It should have been broken long ago,” he quietly informs. His blue eyes rise and he can see the traces of moisture that threaten to fall but do not; her strength keeps them at bay.

“Why?” She suddenly demands, her voice still hushed.

“I am Jedi and you a Senator in the Galactic Republic.”

“You hide behind those titles,” she tells him simply. “Are you scared of what happened between us?”

“Yes.” He does not - cannot - look away. “I am a Jedi,” he states. “What happened was not ... it is forbidden,” he finishes.

“Only attachment is forbidden.” She pauses, her eyes widening minutely. “Attachment,” she repeats, “is forbidden.”

He remains quiet; thankfully, he feels, his hands are hidden within the sleeves of his outer robe.

“Obi-Wan,” she begins but before she can finish, his hands frame her face and with that gesture, he has closed the distance between them. “Don’t,” he whispers against her lips, “make this harder than it is. I am Jedi.”

“You are the man,” she replies; their breath mingles, “whose heart I know.”

“Anakin will return to Naboo as your escort.”

Her lips press against his, swallowing any further words he might say. Her body against his, his eyes close and he cannot help but taste, feel, moan her name when their mouths part for breath. “Padmé, we cannot.”

A finger slips between them and lies upon his lips. “Don’t break this spell,” she pleads. “Please. If not again, then this night.”

He finally nods and she releases a relieved breath. Under the watchful eye of the distant moon, she leads him away from the door and further into the apartment.
