Fic: ‘Tolstoy is not light reading.’

Jun 03, 2011 02:42

Title: Tolstoy is not light reading.
Fandom: Castle
Rating: (G)
Time Period: Anytime during seasons 1-2.
Summary: She’ll have to lose the Tolstoy.

Author's Note: This is quick ‘n’ dirty (for definition see the F. A. Q.).

I realised it’s been a while since I wrote anything for Castle and this is simply to get back into the swing of things. I also couldn’t resist a line that came to mind not too long ago and it could only fit for Alexis: Tolstoy is not light reading.

The Ashley mentioned in the below story is the name of a female friend; it was the first name that came to mind!

A last note: please, no spoilers. I’m only up to season 3, episode 19 and I’d like to watch this season with no spoilers!

“Dad,” she begins, stuffing books in her satchel, “what if Ashley’s late?”

He looks up from scrambling eggs, glances at the clock and holds his hand out. Martha leaves ten dollars on her way to coffee, and he deftly pockets the cash before Alexis can see.

One minute; a new record.

“Alexis,” he lifts the pan and starts serving the eggs, spooning them over the toasty bread on the plates, “slow down. You don’t want a heart attack on your first day, do you?”

Martha steers her to the counter, pushing down on her shoulders until she sits, and he, with a final flourish, drapes a thinly sliced piece of salmon over her eggs. He slides the plate over and turns his attention to the now-empty coffee pot. “Mother, what’s the rule?”

“You make such fabulous coffee, sweetheart,” she smiles as she sits next to Alexis.

“What’s this?” Alexis holds up her plate, raising an eyebrow.

“Brain food,” he promptly replies and spies a book sticking out of her bag. “Tolstoy? Really?”

“Light reading.” She picks up a spoon and begins to eat, reaching for the glass of juice she sees with one hand.

“Take it out before you go to school.” He places his plate on the counter, checking the stove is off before he sits next to his daughter.

“But, dad!”

“Tolstoy is not light reading.” His phone vibrates.

“What did I tell you about bringing your phone to breakfast?”

He grins, grabbing his phone; Martha hides her smile behind her mug. “Take it out before school. Mother, I’m trusting you.”

Martha waves him off and he kisses Alexis’s cheek before grabbing his coat and darting for the door.

“Dad.”

He cringes at being caught but smiles brightly. “I’ll get some on the way!”
