Fic: ‘On his own.’

Apr 29, 2011 03:02

Title: On his own.
Fandom: Harry Potter (movies)
Rating: (G)
Time Period: During Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows, just before he finds the Sword of Godric Gryffindor
Summary: Next to the lake, he sat and thought.

Author's Note: This is quick ‘n’ dirty (for definition see the F. A. Q.).

Watching Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows, Harry was sitting, on guard, just before the Patronus arrived to show him where the Sword was. I wondered what could he be thinking in the dark, not too far from the lake? Then I was caught in his surroundings: the forest, the lake, the fact he was on his own in the dark on watch ...

This ended up being the result.

Whistling through the trees, the wind rattled branches against each other. Long shadows swallowed the trees outside the light barely peeking through the tent. Through the bare branches, he could barely see the stars but he wasn’t looking for them. Instead, he stared straight ahead, arms folded against the cold.

Frozen, the lake didn’t move; no hint, no sign underneath the ice. A light covering of snow hid what little could be seen in the dark.

How could he have let Hermione stay? He should’ve sent her with Ron when he left and not let her stay. But, if he had? Without her caution, her knowledge, her quick thinking, he knew he would’ve died several times over. He’d also have been alone and he wasn’t sure how he would’ve been with only the amulet for company; it probably would’ve driven him completely mad.

He peered into the shard of glass he carried, hoping to see Dumbledore. He needed guidance. He needed to know that sending Hermione away would be the best thing to do. He needed to know what he was doing was the right thing. He needed to know he would succeed.

He saw nothing and the glass fell from cold, nerveless fingers. He should’ve known better.

A glimpse of silver light through the trees caught his eye and he scrambled to his feet. A Patronus! But whose, and why was it here, right now, just at this very moment? Without looking back, he left the tent behind, Hermione’s wand gripped tightly in his fist. He tripped over fallen branches and rocks he couldn’t see in the dark but he made it to the edge of the lake.

The Patronus stood on the frozen water. He stood still, his gaze fixed on the spot of ice where the Patronus stood.
