I couldn’t imagine that Mrs. Pevensie would send her children off without making a last request of the elder two, especially when she wouldn’t know if they were coming back to her.

The suitcase open on the bed, Susan hurriedly looked around her bedroom. Not her bedroom any more, she reminded herself. Not for a long time to come. Possibly not ever again. She raised a hand and dashed away impending tears she could feel were on the edge of falling.
Her mother bustled into the room, stopping only to close the door behind her. Her hat was already on and, muted through the closed door, she could hear the others walking in the hallway; they had to meet at the front door for the taxi to the train station. “Su, I need you to promise me something.”
Susan nodded and sat on the edge of her bed. Her mother sat beside her, reaching up to tuck some hair behind Susan’s shoulder. “You need to promise to keep them safe.”
Susan blinked; it was a good way to keep tears from falling, especially now. “Mother ...”
Her mother’s hand rested on her shoulder. “I’ve already asked Peter but I need your promise as well. I can’t send you all away without knowing.” you’ll be safe. That you’ll keep everyone safe.
Susan knew what had remained unspoken and she bit her lip. This was ... it ... was all so very final. As though ... She forced those thoughts away. “All right,” she nodded. “With Peter,” she felt compelled to point out. She couldn’t do it on her own. Not with Lucy and Edmund; it would be too much.
Her mother suddenly hugged her and Susan wrapped her arms around the older woman in a fierce hug of her own.
