That first winter would've been hard. I've no doubt they tried to erase the Queen from hearts and minds but that first winter would've been hard.

She sits by the window, watching white twirl by on its way down. Nose pressed to the window, her hands in her lap, she watches the dance outside.

Hooves tell of a passing friend.

“You should see this!” She calls, nose still flat on the glass, hands framing her face.

The hooves stop. “No, Lucy Pevensie. No.”

She turns to face him, hands falling from the window to her lap. “Why not?”

“Snow means winter. Winter brings memories.” Of ice and wolves and one hundred years of no Christmas. No holidays where the Queen wasn't first.

“Bad memories?”

He nods.

“But we're here now!” She slips from the window seat. “Snow means snow fights and snowmen and holidays!”

“Ask your brother King Edmund about Turkish delight and he'll answer similarly to how I just did.”

She walks over, grabs his hand and pulls him to the window. “See how lovely it is.”

He pulls his hand free. His hooves slightly skid on the stone floor. “Maybe next year, Lucy Pevensie. Maybe next year.”

She turns to him, her eyes brimming with tears. “She hurt you, didn't she?”

He smiles, lopsidedly. “Give us time, Lucy Pevensie, for snow to mean play and food and holidays. With enough time, we will love winter as you do. We will not forget but we will love.”

She nods her understanding, steps back and toward the window. “I look forward to when you can love its beauty as I do.”

He nods, picks up the scroll he had dropped. He watches as she reseats herself by the window and it is a long moment before his hooves are heard on the stone, going away from the window and its tableau.

She leans against the window but her delight in the snow is gone. Instead, her heart envisions all those in their homes, listening for the cry of the Queen's secret police.
