DON’T SHOOT ME! I HAD TO DO IT! AND IT’S LONG!! SPOILERS FOR SERIES 3!

Jul 01, 2009 22:54

I originally posted this on 1st July, but then messed up the cut and did all manner of thick things, so I pulled it, sorted it out and - here it is again! It's very long - sorry - but I'm too dumb to be able to split it into sections. It's mainly a character study of Guy, but with a bit of Izzy chucked in for good measure.

what I think makes Guy tick - sort of... )

character study, guy of gisborne, robin hood, richard armitage

Ah yes, the golden rule of never taking a word at face value if it can in any way be rendered smutty!

I don't think it surprising that Richard didn't know what the hell was going on, as the writers didn't have a clue either!
Yes, I believe it was Dom Minghella's little wheeze to off Marian in order to shake up Bobbin...obviously, he was on something at the time - it certainly wasn't this planet.
You have to feel sorry for JA - rubbish characterisation, his position as hero undermined by the unexpected popularity of the baddie (who in addition, picks up the critical acclaim) and then - potentially, a meaty story line! Except...series 3 happened!!!
Oh, the groans that must have come from the actors as they opened up their scripts...

Well, if you've got the boxed set and seen the extras you'll know that the *cough* producer's really good idea was that Robin spend epi 1 'grieving' and 'revenging' and then, under Tuck's direction, become 'Robin Hood' Hero, leaving his love for Marian behind. Jonas also comments that, well, Robin's spent the journey back from the Holy Land, which would have taken a few months, grieving so he's ready to move on by the time he gets back to England. Wow. A few months to grieve the love of his life. I feel like asking whether he thought that might have been too long? Noone seems to have pointed out that by removing grief and resolution behind Robin/Jonas is robbed of viable, human motivation, which is what most people can connect with, and left it to the one character in the show who's demonstrated he was fallible and - human. There's also a bit of an intriguing comment from someone on the Guardian's announcement of the cancellation of the series. She writes for telly but not in the UK and suggests that "The actors did brilliant work ( ... )

I haven't got the box set for series 2, so I was really interested to see what the 'reasoning' behind the debacle was. I think that lightning fast Getting Over It on Bobbin's part alienated quite a few people. His trip back from Acre really wasn't that long, Jonas ( ... )

To be fair to Jonas, it could be that he was regurgitating the carp he'd been fed from said *cough* producer for the extras vid. God knows, Richard dances fairly nimbly around the truth in some of his interviews. Could be that Jonas is leaving because of the kinds of direction he's been getting, such as removing all traces of conflict for his character not to mention anything that would give him the chance to give Robin any emotional depth.

I think you're so right - I've not seen Jonas in anything else, so can't judge him as an actor, but he's not been given anything substantial to work with in RH and as a result, doesn't come across particularly well. RA's older and more experienced and so could probably circumvent the heavy directorial hand and rubbish writing to a certain extent. Certainly, any conflict and depth in Guy was more down to the actor than anyone else.
RA could always hang up his boots as an actor and go into politics, he's so skilled at dodging awkward questions in interviews - to his credit, he didn't speak out about the shambles that was 2-13 until after the show's run was finished and he was very diplomatic in the Digital Spy interview about series 3, even though he'd seen the scripts by then and must have been thinking OMG!

I saw a few epis of Ghost Squad and Jonas is actually quite good. It's probably on the strength of that he was brought in for RH.

And, yep. It's the Digital Spy interview I was thinking of. 'Diplomatic' is an amazing understatement. Based on that I think everyone can be forgiven for believing he'd be in S4, assuming there was one. I somehow suspect that whatever Richard thought of epi 13 it was in line with whatever he thought about the rest of the series. It will be interesting to see what he says in the Vulpes Libris interview.
