I love reading about your new dog and dude! The cake and the pies sound excellent! *sigh* I remember when cooking for high altitude was second nature to me. Now I wouldn't have a clue.
:)
Have you had a chance to watch the Roswell DVDs yet? I know you had a lot lined up to see before them, but I was just curious ... and pining for my behr.
Haven't watched Roswell yet, but actually have them out for viewing this week. :) My work plate is pretty clear right now and I'm trying to just chill out with the dog, so DVD viewing is top of my list.
The altitude issue for cooking has been a major adjustment for me. For general cooking, I've pretty much got it under control, but baking is so different. Changes to recipes vary from one recipe to another. Cakes are different than pies which are different than cookies. And within categories you have variances. So annoying. But when the stuff comes out right, mmm mmm good. :)
For your and Buddy's good, I highly recommend a crate for when you have to leave him inside alone. Crate training is super easy and they don't hate it as much as they want you to believe they do.
That trip out of the house was the first he was alone. We've been in and out for trips to the post office and stuff and he's been fine. The problem with the window was that the blind was down and he wanted to see out of it. So we keep the other blinds down and close the bedroom door if we leave.
The info sheet from the previous owners said he was used to being alone in the house for about 2 hours at a time. We're going to have to consider it though with the surgery issue though. But he's rarely inside alone and he's really taken to his bed as his "space", so I'm not sure about a crate. We shall see.
If Buddy's separation anxiety gets bad, let me know if you want advice or just a sympathetic ear. We went through this with our (rescued) Greyhound, who had/has one of the worst cases of separation anxiety on record, and I think we tried just about everything in the book before we figured out how to manage it.
And if I could offer one piece of advice right now - if you're going to go through ACL surgery (ACL problems are something we also have experience with, sadly), you might want to consider crate-training Buddy now. There's a good chance that, properly done, it will help with the separation anxiety, too - a crate is a good security place (and it's also a place where he can't hurt himself when he panics) - but with ACL injuries, crate rest can make the difference between a successful resolution and a disaster. At the very least, you'll probably want him on crate rest right after the surgery.
And, in conclusion: yay dogs! I love hearing about other people's dogs, even though your posts are kind of making me want to get another
Thanks for the tips. We're definitely going through with surgery, it's just a matter of which surgical option. So far his anxiety doesn't seem bad (I've dealt with dogs with far more serious problems), it's seems mostly like concern about his security since he's new here and came from the shelter. We'll see. Our biggest worry right now is him not getting in the truck, but we're being patient on that. Thank goodness we live in a very small town and can walk him to the vet.
