I've been thinking. *grins* I know, bad sign, yadda yadda.
But anyway, I've been wondering whether some of the difficulties you've had with you beast has to do with the fact that you never imprinted onto a pack.
The first few shifts, well, they're rough. People can't remember what happens, and they're just ravening, slavering beasts. (Heh, sorry, had to use trite words, they're just too yummy not to use). So, packs have an alpha take care of them, watch over them, take them hunting, stuff like that, and eventually they start to remember the shift and learn to control their bloodlust.
But if they're caged, they take their anger out on their bodies, and they don't learn to control their beast. It's just one of the many reason that lycanthrope "halfway houses" are such a travesty.
I'm not suggesting that spending time with a pack will "cure" you. Your beast is probably way too old to imprint, but it might help others who get turned in your wizarding community.
