"THAT'S SOME FREAKY FRIDAY SHIT"
Rachel (& Jesse)
Prequel: Stages Apart

Rachel had gone to bed good and early, same as she always did. So as she woke up, she frowned, confused as to why she should be feeling as she did in that moment… uncomfortable, out of her place… She rubbed at her eyes, tried to resettle in her bed, hoping to find comfort. But as she did try and work her way into a better spot, that was when she realized what the problem was: this wasn’t her bed.

Her eyes snapped open, looked left and right… This was not her room, and yet… something about it felt like it was, felt familiar. It was as though… it could be her room, but with some serious rethinking. She sat up, the better to see what was going on. The same feeling remained, but it was impossible… How had she gotten… Where was she? This place sort of looked like her room, and the trophies, the…

She jumped out of bed and ran up to look at them. She knew those trophies from sight, but how was it even possible? Then she saw the plaque up front.

2009 Show Choir Midwest Regional Championship - 1st place - Vocal Adrenaline, Carmel High School

There were others this way, different competitions, but with one factor in common. “Vocal Adrenaline?” she spoke to herself, looking around some more…

She felt like she knew something but she didn’t really know it. But then among all the trophies marked in her rival club’s name, she saw others that officially settled the matter, that it was her room: Some of the trophies had her name on them.

“What?” she blinked, whispering. Looking around some more, she could see more evidence that it was in fact her room, but hardly for reasons that had to do with personal touches. There were pictures, places where her name was written - including school books… with ‘Carmel High School’ stamped in the pages. And the pictures, there she was with some of Vocal Adrenaline, with… She picked up one of the frames, looked at the picture. There she was, with them, and their director, her mother.

She stared at the picture for a good long while, with two thoughts running into one another, over and over again: ‘This is impossible’ and ‘this is wonderful.’ The first one seemed more pressing though, and she looked to the door… She didn’t know what she’d find out there. One thing she knew for sure was that her dads would be there: She knew what it was now that had seemed familiar… her fathers’ decorative style.

With a sigh, she pulled the door open, just a crack, and she peeked through. The house had that same sort of ‘different house, same decorator’ feel as her room. And there was the smell… breakfast. If anything, whatever was going on, this was home, this was safe…

When she found the kitchen, there was Pop at the stove. He heard her come in and turned to greet her. “Good morning,” he nodded, carrying the pan to a plate, putting out the eggs he’d just cooked.

“Morning,” she spoke as she went to get the plate she knew was hers - Pop always made his own plate last. He seemed surprised for a moment before finally handing it over. She took it and went to the table. It was as she did so that she noticed the place settings, a usual fixture on their table… There would always be three, only here there were two. She was here, and he was her… So then… “Where’s Dad?” she ended up asking, her fork unable to touch the food until she could know.

“Well, he’ll be at his place, won’t he? Which reminds me, if you want to go over on Thursday instead of Friday, I… have a date,” he bowed his head with a smirk. Rachel sat up abruptly, dropping her fork. As she did, it lightly pricked at her finger… She startled… it was real, this whole world, her with her rivals, her mother, her fathers apparently separated and… dating…

“Excuse me,” she mumbled, getting up to head back upstairs. She heard him call after her, but she just kept going, back up to her room which wasn’t her room. She sat back on the bed, wishing she knew how to make sense of… all this. She thought home would make it all okay, but it was part of the problem too. She turned her head to look at the clock. Well, she might as well see how else this world could mess with her head… So she got dressed to go to school… to Carmel High.

The place was all so different from McKinley. She’d been there before, but she didn’t ever really take the time to look around. At their school, Glee Club was hardly something that mattered to others, no matter how hard she tried to change it. But at Carmel, one quick walk around the halls made it clear… This was Vocal Adrenaline’s kingdom, and they just studied in it. This became even more evident as she walked through the halls and was repeatedly greeted, by - proper - name. The more freaked out she got could only go so far, especially as she turned a corner and was grabbed along by the arm by none other than Andrea Cohen.

“Where have you been? Practice is starting!” she told Rachel as she pulled her toward the auditorium. Rachel was so caught by surprise, that she let her.

When they reached the auditorium, Andrea was still pulling her along, because when she saw her mother, she froze up a bit. As they got closer, she realized, in hearing what Shelby was talking about, that it wasn’t the same time as she’d left in her own world… Regionals hadn’t happened… Sectionals had just happened.

“Miss Berry, Miss Cohen, thank you for joining us,” Shelby spoke, wordlessly waving her hand for them to join the others. “Alright, so Sectionals is behind us,” Shelby carried on.

Rachel couldn’t not watch her… Did she know she knew she was her mother? It was earlier than when she found out, but then she found that didn’t make sense… this was a whole other world, maybe here she’d always…

She was pulled back to ‘reality’ when she heard the words “New Directions.” Shelby was going on about how McKinley had won their own Sectionals the previous weekend, and she’d gotten the video for them to see.

She froze up, transfixed when she saw who it was who kicked off New Directions’ set, while the rest of Vocal Adrenaline barely paid attention… What was Jesse doing in there?
