"TWO GLASS SLIPPERS"
Will, Will/Emma
He tried to stop her, but she was surprisingly fast on her feet, which he realized may have had to do with the fact that she’d left without her shoes. The momentary thought of this allowed for him to slow down, which let Emma get away. He sighed, running a hand through his hair before turning back to return to his home. He shut the door and went to sit.
Things had moved… too fast? He wasn’t sure what to think, really. He supposed he’d let the idea of things moving forward between him and Emma get in the way of the fact that she wasn’t ready. It had been her idea, but even then… He had to think he should have known better.
He’d known her for a couple of years, since she’d come to work at McKinley, and he felt he knew the person she was. It wasn’t long before some of her issues came to light. The first time he’d seen her take out all those containers, saw the way she ate her lunch… Sure, he’d kind of stared, he admitted it. But he’d asked about it, hoping not to sound like he was judging her. In hindsight he knew she had been vague, at the time, but still she had confided in him this part of her life. He knew it probably wasn’t easy, and yet she’d trusted him.
He went back into his room, and there he sighed as he found Emma’s shows. She hadn’t just left them in a heap, of course, she’d placed them neatly side by side. He picked them up and looked at them. It made him smile briefly, to observe the shoes… then he remembered his ‘messy things’-despising Cinderella, running on her feet… part of him wanted to still go after her, help her before she got too messy, but then he wondered if he might be intruding, if she’d prefer to be alone… so he stayed.
He turned the shoes around in his hands for a while. They were still in excellent condition, and really he’d expect no less from her. Still there were the signs of the day’s journey on them. In honoring her wishes, he carried on by deciding to clean them up before returning them to her in the morning. He went and set the shoes down on the dining room table, got the items he needed and went to sit.
He had to admit, part of him had been surprised by Emma’s ‘virgin’ revelation… and the other part, once he stopped to think about it, realized he wasn’t. It was just something he should have figured out, just knowing the other facts. It had put a bit of pressure on him, he had to admit. It was a big deal for anyone, but for her… There was that much more at stake. He was alright with it though… It was Emma.
They had both gone through so much, just to get to the point where they were at now. There were crushes, engagement, a fake baby, an almost-marriage and a broken one, and then… near-loss, realization, and a kiss…
It was a rough start, for her and for him. As much as they’d waited on this, now that they were there they could no longer rely on fantasy, only reality, and reality wasn’t nearly as smooth and perfect. There were bumps along the way there as well, the way there had been in the ‘before’ period.
He wasn’t proud of how he had reacted, what he’d done after encountering Shelby Corcoran down at Carmel High. As hard as it was for Emma, it was confusing for him, coming off his one and only relationship, with Terri… It wasn’t, wouldn’t be an excuse to Emma. He didn’t want to hurt her, and foolishly he buried the whole event like it had never happened. It was better.
As he finished with one shoe and began with the other, he came to the conclusion that he’d find a way, they both would. They’d make this work. Maybe it’d take time, and work, but they both knew the good things never came easy.
