If you think McCain's not so bad, think again

STEPHANOPOULOS: You’re for a constitutional amendment banning abortion, with some exceptions for life and rape and incest.
MCCAIN: Rape, incest, and the life of the mother. Yes.

Shamelessly ripped off from Slog. Read the rest.

Goddamn it. I really was hoping that he wouldn't be as bad as the others. I'd heard him described as a Democrat in all but name--not much better than Republicans, but still not likely to fight against women's rights--but I can see that wasn't accurate. How is Rudy Giuliani on civil rights? He's out for the White House, too.

"Democrat in all but name" describes Giuliani much more aptly than it does McCain. Giuliani has a moderate to liberal stance on guns, gays, and abortion. McCain, on the other hand, has always been farther to the right than his media persona lets on. The quote in my entry shows him tacking farther and more vocally to the right, and Giulani may well be doing the same in the near future.

He'll pretty much have to. Wouldn't want to alienate the voting Republican constituency by showing regard for, oh, the Constitution. Darn two-party system.

It is apparent that he's being overtly ambiguous in his rhetoric - his defense being federalism has tones that, if I am honest, do resonate with me. Reading this article among others proves that politics is about appealing to the widest audience possible and forces a candidate to sacrifice any sort of depth in doing so. I've never been a big McCain supporter but I did think, as you insinuate in your heading, that he wasn't "so bad" and would be a better alternative to most others. That said, I am pro-choice. Plain and simple. I'd like the decision to be in the hands of the state and local governments because I don't think religious and moral issues are the mandate of the federal government, hell - it shouldn't even be an issue. It stands to reason that in a "free society" citizens have the "freedom of choice" over what they do for and with their bodies. I was surprised to read he was for torture given his experience which makes me think he's just toting lines to win over the nomination in '08. May not be forgivable but is at least ( ... )
